September 14, 1941 - On this date, the Paterson Panthers shut out the Long Island Indians 23-0 in the opening game of the 1941 American Professional Football Association campaign.

On the day, Paterson used their aerial game to their advantage, while the Panthers defense quieted the Long Island club.

Three Paterson players scored for the home team: Dale Burnett (Panthers player/coach who played 10 seasons with the New York Giants), Bob Cook, and Vince Renzo.

September 13, 1936 - On this date, the Brooklyn Football Dodgers edged the Paterson Panthers by a score of 13-7 on the Hinchliffe Stadium gridiron.

With the score tied 7-7 in the fourth quarter, Brooklyn marched their way downfield as Tony Kaska scored the winning touchdown for the Dodgers.

Johnny Biancone was quite influential in Brooklyn's victory, as he faked a pass then ran 60 yards for the Dodgers first touchdown. Paterson's lone touchdown was scored by Doug Wyckoff.

Today will mark the first professional baseball playoff game at Hinchliffe Stadium since 1935.

Tonight, the New Jersey Jackals will take on the Ottawa Titans in Game Two of the Frontier League Wild Card Series

The last time Hinchliffe Stadium hosted a postseason game was a 9-3 victory by the home team, the New York Cubans, over the Pittsburgh Crawfords.

September 10, 1935 - Hinchliffe Stadium had it all, baseball, football, motorsports...and a wedding? On this date, motorcycle racer Lou Wilson married Anne Murphy in front of over 10,000 people before the start of the motorcycle race.

Although Wilson was from California, he selected Paterson to get married, as the fans here were always great to him. After the wedding, he and his new bride crossed the finish line and were greeted with checkered flags.

As for the race, Wilson didn't place in any of the races, probably a case of the wedding day jitters. Crocky Rawding won the scratch race final.

Hinchliffe Stadium Profile: Buck Leonard

Happy Birthday to Buck Leonard, who was born on this date in 1907. Leonard played 16 seasons in the Negro Leagues primarily for the Homestead Grays. He and Josh Gibson led Homestead to nine Negro National League championships in a row.

A student of the game, the left-hander took great pride in his hitting having eared a .341 lifetime batting average. Leonard won the batting title three times in his illustrious career.

On the defensive end, he was stellar first baseman with a strong arm and manned his position so well that he was referred to as the Black Lou Gehrig.

In a game at Hinchliffe Stadium, Leonard went 1 for 4 with an RBI as his Homestead Grays edged the New York Cubans by a score of 5-3. For his contributions to the game, Leonard was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 1972.

On this Labor Day, we not only recognize Hinchliffe Stadium as a historic sports and entertainment venue, but also as a destination for the Labor Movement. During the 1930s, Hinchliffe Stadium hosted a number of labor rallies, and even labor contract celebrations.

In 1934, a mass meeting was held at Hinchliffe Stadium where approximately 7,000 silk and dye workers gathered and listened to labor leaders. At this meeting, it was announced that the National Textile Workers union was being absorbed by the Associated, a division of the American Federation of Silk Workers.

September 6, 1938 - At a motorcycle race at Hinchliffe Stadium, Bill Normyle suffered a concussion and potential fractured skull when he lost control of his bike just before the finish line and crashed into the guard fence in the fourth heat. Crocky Rawding won the handicap final that evening.

August 2, 1941 - On this date, the New York Black Yankees mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the Newark Eagles by a score of 12-8 at Hinchliffe Stadium.

The Newark Eagles served as the home team in this contest. In the second inning, Newark got out to a 5-0 lead. At the end of six innings of play, New York was down by a score of 7-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Black Yankees mounted their comeback. Four runs in the seventh narrowed the margin to 7-5. The Eagles answered back with one run in the home half of the seventh to make it 8-5.

Time was ticking for New York. With two outs in the top of the eighth, the Black Yankees had two runners on base; at the plate: Hall of Famer George "Mule" Suttles."

The "Mule" kicked Len Hooker's offering over the left field wall for a three-run home run to tie the game.

In the top of the ninth, New York shortstop Anthony Cooper's two-run single gave the Black Yankees the lead, and Suttles would later have his own two-run single to solidify the game for New York. On the day, Suttles went 3 for 5 with seven runs batted in.
