At its peak the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in Manchester, New Hampshire ran 17,000 workers through a single continuous millyard along the Merrimack, in what was the largest cotton textile plant on earth. The buildings ran for roughly a mile and a half on the east bank alone. 🏭

Amoskeag did not just build mills, it built the city around them. The company laid out the street grid, put up the boarding houses, planted the trees, sold the land, and dug the canals that fed water power to each building in sequence. Manchester was a company town designed on paper before most of it existed, and it was deliberately made handsome, because Amoskeag wanted the kind of workers who would stay.

The workforce came from Quebec, Ireland, Greece, Poland and Lebanon, and the mill floors were organized so that entire families worked the same rooms. Weavers were paid by the cut. A skilled weaver in 1910 might run eight looms at once in a room loud enough that everyone learned to lip read.

It ended fast. Southern mills with newer equipment and cheaper labor took the market, a long strike in 1922 broke the relationship between the company and the city, and Amoskeag liquidated in 1936. Manchester lost its reason for existing in a single decade. 🧵

The millyard is still there, full of offices and labs and a university, which is a better outcome than most mill cities got.
