How to safely practice
'Kotenage'
Do not ANTICIPATE your training partner's moves....wait for them to effectively "land" the move or position before you react with the counter. when the underhook was set "deep" he did not hurt me. but he reacted too quickly the last time and almost injured me.
drills are also meant to build skill and practice technique so you never need to be going 100%.
most clubs avoid "dangerous" moves, however, i think all moves in sumo should be covered to include the riskier ones...you just need to adjust your training method and be mindful of the ex*****on.
Butsukari instruction for your hip and hand placements for pushing UP and back....not just straight back.
