Hālau Hula Olana

Howard and Olana founded the family Hālau to teach the children and perpetuate the Hula taught by Olanaʻs mother, Blossom Kaipo.

Ashlee studied Cultural Anthropology at UH Manoa and now works as the Director of Outreach and Education at Kuhiawaho, a traditional Hawaiian lo’i and fishpond located in Waiawa. She loves traveling, cooking, and enjoying the outdoors as much as possible with her family, friends, and her puppy. We babysat Ashlee La’akea so she was always on my knee during classes until she began dancing herself. It’s a joy to have her back in Hālau Hula Olana. All of our communication comes through her! Now you can put a face to the sender of our e-mails. She’ll be there at Saturday’s reopening of Hālau Hula Olana. #hula #hulababy #baby #hulagirl #huladance #huladancer #dance #dancer #hawaii #hawaiian #halauhulaolana #hulaisintheheir #hulaislife #life #hawaiilife #aloha #lei #culture #legacy #lineage #legends #authentic #grand #granddaughter #love #kumuhula

As we excitedly and nervously prepare to once again open our doors this Saturday, we wanted to mahalo all of you who attended our Welina-Welcome Lessons.  We cannot wait to start anew with you.
We also thought you might enjoy learning a little bit more about the mo’opuna who have returned to help lift and move us forward.
Lana Lindsey Ai is a junior at Kanu Ka ‘Āina Ka ‘Ohā school.  She is the 9th of our grandchildren and the daughter of our son, Tai.  Lana began hula at the age of 4.  She loves music and is mostly self-taught.  Lana wants to study music in college, maybe becoming a teacher.  She still sleeps over and loves just hanging out with us.  We love hanging out with her.  We’re grateful for her tech savvy-ness as she got us out of a Wi-Fi pickle this past Saturday.
We also wanted to wish our Teya Jean a happy birthday today!  She’s pictured with Lana in one of their first shows together.

Mothers and daughters have a special bond.  Our entire style is based on the idea that a daughter loved her mother enough to want to learn and then teach what she was taught, to lose herself in the legacy to strengthen the lineage.  We’re four generations in now. Annie taught Blossom, Blossom taught Olana, Olana taught Natalie and together they’re teaching Sha-Lei.  There’s still another generation coming too.  Hula doesn’t keep us together.  Love does.  Honor does.  Sacrifice does…Happy National Daughter’s Day. #mom #babygirl #mothers #daughters #daughter #love #girl #girls #hulagirl #kumuhula #heir #hulaisintheheir #aloha

Shutting out the sound of the crowd… You sit there, reviewing, consumed with the fear that a mistake you make will disrupt all that you’ve worked so hard on.  “You know you know it.”  “You’ve given the time.” “You belong here.”

Shutting out the voices in your head… You sit there, questioning yourself, consumed with the fear that a mistake you make will disrupt all that you’ve worked so hard on. “You know nothing.” “You’ve wasted your time.” “You don’t belong here.”

You decide who to listen to. You choose! Hula connects you to your Kumu and to all those that came before you. Hula opens those relationships. You strengthen them. With every aligning step. With every move and bend. Their voice will never steer you wrong. You just need to learn to listen…

“‘Ae!  Ho’omākaukau!”  Are you ready?  See you on Saturday.

Hula teaches us to sacrifice, to give and to bend.  We learn to be supple and gracious, pliable to change.  We are asked to lose ourselves in the mele, to become the phenomena of the physical world, imitating nature’s fluctuations, embodying ancestral gestures.  But never without #sacrifice.  #hula #hulaisintheheir #huladance #huladancer #halauhulaolana  #kumuhula #dance #dancer #choreography #hawaii #hawaiian #aloha #legacy #lineage #kuleana #mahalo #merriemonarch #culture #authentic #blossom #bloom #lei #hulaislife

We’ve been digging deep into our pictures that have yellowed with age.  It’s hard to imagine this photo is 38 years old!!
In our preparations for our reopening, we’ve been digging deep within ourselves as well, allowing the best of the memories to rise and remembering these children and their families.
Our hula school would be just a structure without them, empty and cold.  What good is a Kumu, the root source, without branches and flowers?
The pictures may be blurry but our gratitude has been defined by time.  Thinking of these girls today….

We miss Moanike’ala Nabarro on the news, don’t you?  She had an ease and a local like ability.  We want her back!
Well, we’ve got some news.  (I can hear “Momo” delivering it in her giggly, happy way too, making us all roll laughing on the floor).
The first week of Welina- Welcome classes were fabulous!  Thank you to everyone who joined us.  We’re excited to get to know you better as we share our beloved hula legacy with you.
If you’re reading this and wondering, “You mean classes started??”  Our email server failed, took a dive, crashed and burned, last week.  The emails we sent to you, well they’re hovering somewhere in the clouds (unlike our server).  Hālau Hula Olana’s fabulous Communications Director, Ashlee, @ashleelaakea , is working on that.  If you get a repeat email (because some of you did receive it) we apologize.  On our side, it says everyone got it but we know for a fact a lot of you didn’t!  Sorry!!  You should hear from us this week.  Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I remember when my parents gave me the responsibility of their Merrie Monarch class. In that moment, I felt the heft of their kuleana. I had never realized the weight of responsibility they carried. It was overwhelming.

I constantly asked myself as I carefully created movements and gestures, “What would grandma do? Would she approve?” And although there were 7 judges I knew I would face, the two I feared the most were my teachers, my parents. I looked at their faces, deep within their eyes, for their acknowledgment. If I saw a hint of dislike, I reviewed what I had done and refined it. I listened to their corrections, suggestions and adjusted. Making them proud was essential.

As I stood on the front stairs of that stage, looking at dancers standing at all 6 entry points, preparing for our final dance of rehearsal, my kumu mom came to me, grabbed my arm and pulled me toward her as she whispered in my ear, “You’re a genius.” I looked her in her eyes that were inches from mine and replied with immense gratitude, “Thank you for teaching me how.”

“He mau maka poina ‘ole… Eyes so unforgettable”.

In this moment on the stage, looking at my hands, I saw my grandmother’s and my mother’s hands. At that moment I felt their approval and love. I have felt this same feeling a few other times since, but nothing like how I felt it then, and especially how I feel it now.

I look forward to my return to Hālau Hula Olana. I’m nervous but it’s that feeling I’ll look for to guide my decisions and inspire creativity. See you all on Saturday for our first Zoom ‘Welina—Welcome’ Classes. It’s gonna be epic.

So you think there’s no crying in hula?
Hula is 90% emotion and %10 motion.  Without emotion, you’re merely moving through required gestures.  Without it, it’s not hula.  Hula aligns us to the stories and antiquities of our ancestors, whisks us to places non existent and allows us visitational moments with loved ones now passed.  There indeed is crying in hula.
Congratulations @kalaokeola on your new senior management position.  #halauhulaolana #hulaisintheheir #hula #huladance #huladancer #dance #winner #champion #hawaii #honolulu #hawaiihonolulu #pearlharbor #culture #authentic #ohana #aloha #mahalo #keikihula #merriemonarch #hawaiianmusic

“E ‘onipa’a i ka ’imi na’auao”… Be steadfast in the seeking of knowledge.
Excellence isn’t achieved in the garnering of awards. Excellence results in our attempts to master the lessons of our master.
In 1987, I designed a class for young women, by invitation only, and named it “Nohonani”, inspired by the mele “Lili’u E, Noho Nani Mai”. Noho nani means ‘to sit beautifully’. It also translates ‘to live beautifully’.
Dancing doesn’t begin on the outside of our body. It stems from within. Every meticulous movement springs from an emotion, a thought or memory. One’s heart is revealed in the dance, thus teachings of love, understanding, acceptance, service and sacrifice were foundational, are foundational. The women that emerged from this class became leaders in our community, doctors, nurses, CEOs, managers, teachers, mothers…
Our queen is the quintessential pattern for us to emulate. “Lili’u E” is one of the first mele we learn in hula. It is our beginnings. May we strive until our endings to live a life like hers.

Remember when Keiki Hula was at Kekūhaupi’o Gym? It was hot but we all squished in together on those bleachers cheering on our favorite dancers. And just who were your favorites?
I recall our girls finishing their dances, walking gracefully and graciously off the stage and out the back door and then running around the building through the front doors to watch these boys, their boys. And as the doors swung open,
the screams of all the little girls not from our hālau would escape.
Our home telephone would ring and ring and ring for weeks after Keiki Hula, all from girls hoping to talk to our sons. These boys of Hālau Hula Olana … THESE boys were known as the heartbreakers.
