Have you heard anyone claim they are a tenth-degree black belt in Taekwondo? On the contrary, Kukkiwon does not grant the tenth dan rank to a person that is alive. The tenth dan is only given after the passing of someone who has contributed greatly to the development of Taekwondo. Attaining tenth dan is considered to hold posthumous recognition, and it is a great honor. Value-wise, the ninth dan is the highest number in the system a living person can possess because it symbolizes the number of endings followed by beginnings. In other words, as one door closes, another door opens; the number nine revolves around cleansing and attaining wisdom. With this in mind, do people who award themselves as a tenth dan holder have a rational reason behind it?
