Often, we learn martial arts only by mimicking the physical movements of our teachers, but zanshin is not something you can copy. Sure, you can mimic the “look” of zanshin you might see from your teacher, but until you experience zanshin, it cannot be realized.

What is it?

Zanshin is a term used in Japanese martial arts that refers to a state of awareness, alertness, and readiness to respond.

The literal translation of "zanshin" is "remaining mind" or "lingering heart." It pertains to maintaining mental awareness and preparedness, even after executing an action or technique.

In practice, it means being constantly vigilant and ready during combat or training sessions and everyday life.

Zanshin is written in Japanese as 残心, where:

残 (zan) means "remain" or "lingering"
心 (shin) means "heart" or "mind"

Zanshin is in the moment, wholly committed to what you’re doing and following through to its end. It’s those moments when your mind is on guard and fully alert to its surroundings.

It’s nothing mystical.

It’s rather ordinary.

One of the many keys to training, which I've found to be unused by many, is renzoku-waza.

At its core, renzoku-waza embodies a continuous flow of techniques in Karate. It's not merely about stringing moves together but doing so with fluidity and precision. It’s vital to grasp that renzoku-waza isn't an exhibition of choreography; it's the practical application of combat skills.

Is renzoku-waza something you do as part of your training? How has it helped, if at all?

The decision to act, to defend yourself, needs to be made long before the moment of need.

Be effective first, and then as you begin to understand the principles that make the technique effective, work to make it efficient.

This girl here has been an amazing addition to our family, and our security. Dogs have long served as natural alarms against potential intruders. Here's how they act as early warning mechanisms:

1 - Barking: A primary and instinctive way dogs signal the presence of strangers. Even untrained dogs often bark when they detect unfamiliar sounds or see unknown individuals.
2 - Superior Senses: With their advanced hearing and smell capabilities, dogs can pick up noises and odors much earlier than we can. This allows them to identify possible threats sooner.
3 - Visible Presence: Just seeing a dog can discourage many potential burglars. Having a dog suggests an added risk of detection.
4 - Changed Behavior: When sensing someone unfamiliar, dogs might growl, adopt a more alert stance, focus on doors or windows, or pace restlessly.
5 - Potential Physical Barrier: Some dogs might confront an intruder. Even without attacking, their presence can give homeowners extra time to act or call for help.
6 - Guarding Instinct: Many dogs naturally want to defend their homes and families. This makes them more prone to notify or challenge perceived threats.
7 - Consistent Vigilance: Dogs usually have set routines. Anything unusual, like unexpected noises or movements, can cause them to react.
8 - Territorial Nature: As naturally territorial beings, dogs often react to perceived invasions of their space with warning behaviors.

While dogs offer invaluable alerts, it's key to recognize their signals. Even though they might occasionally raise false alarms, it's wise to check on any alerts they provide. Of course, for optimal home security, it's best to pair a dog's natural instincts with other protective measures like alarm systems, surveillance cameras, and strong locks.

Bunkai, also known as analysis, is the study and interpretation of the martial applications of the techniques and movements found in traditional karate kata (pre-arranged sequences of movements). Bunkai training involves analyzing the movements in kata and understanding their practical applications in self-defense situations. This can involve breaking down the movements and techniques in kata and practicing them in a variety of scenarios with a partner.

It's one of the most important aspects of karate training but is missing from many dojo. It helps practitioners to understand the practical applications of the techniques and movements found in kata, and to develop their self-defense skills. It even helps to improve problem-solving skills, reflexes and reaction time, and physical fitness.

Oi is a Japanese term that means to actively chase or pursue something.

This versatile term can also be used as a noun to signify a chase or pursuit.

In martial arts, oi is often used to describe techniques that require an individual to actively pursue or chase an opponent in order to close the distance between them. The term can also be used in other contexts to indicate following or tailing someone.

One of the most well-known martial arts techniques that utilize oi is oi zuki.

This punch involves stepping forward and extending the arm while simultaneously chasing or pursuing an opponent. By actively pursuing the opponent, the punch has a greater chance of successfully landing and striking the target.

Its versatility makes it a useful term for describing a variety of actions, both in and out of the realm of martial arts.
