What is Formation Skydiving? 🪂

Formation Skydiving, or FS, is the classic belly-to-earth competition discipline, and one of the most accessible ways to get started in competitive skydiving!

Teams of 4, 8, or 16 performers, plus a camera flyer, build predetermined sequences of formations by taking grips on one another’s arms and legs.

🔹 Each correctly completed formation earns a point.

🔹 Teams repeat the sequence as many times as possible within the working time.

🔹 As the team size grows, so does the challenge, requiring speed, precision and coordination from every flyer.

FS also offers a clear path for competitors to progress as their skills develop. You can begin working on your formation skills as soon as you earn your A License, and competing in Nationals/Worlds as early as a B license, with classes designed for different experience levels:

🔹 Beginner
🔹 Intermediate
🔹 Advanced
🔹 Open

As competitors move through the classes, the formations and sequences become increasingly challenging.

4-Way Formation Skydiving kicks off tomorrow at USPA Nationals! 🏆 Follow along as we highlight more of the competition here at Skydive Perris!

MEET THE TEAM: SPACE COWBOYS! 🚀🤠

Rebecca Wu, Vincent Faires, Will Kitto, Cole Anderson & Justin Larios, competing in VFS Open at Nationals!

This is their second year together with this lineup and their first Nationals! 🇺🇸

What makes this team especially fun? Every member of Space Cowboys also participates or competes in other disciplines, including CRW, wingsuit, artistic, big way, BASE and more!

Space Cowboys is truly a homegrown team. They’ve taught some of their own teammates how to freefly along the way, with Justin first joining their vertical skills camps a few years ago and Will just starting freeflying last year!

From learning together to competing together, they’ve built this team right here at Perris!

Good luck, Space Cowboys! 💙

What is VFS? 🪂

VFS stands for Vertical Formation Skydiving, a competitive discipline where teams build formations while flying both head-up and head-down.

Using advanced freeflying skills, athletes rotate, transition between orientations and take grips… all while falling at speeds that can exceed 150 mph!

🔹 A VFS team consists of four performers and a camera flyer.

🔹 Teams earn points by completing assigned formations in the correct order.

🔹 The camera flyer captures the jump from the best possible angle so judges can evaluate each formation and transition.

With speed, precision, teamwork and serious freeflying skills all coming together, VFS is one of the most dynamic disciplines you’ll see at Nationals.

Follow along during Nationals to see some of the country’s best VFS teams in action! 💙

Nationals are still running hot and we’re continuing our series celebrating some of the athletes who make this sport what it is!

Next up: Rebecca Wu, competing in Freefly and VFS!

Rebecca got into skydiving 8.5 years ago with competition in mind. She loved the idea of the structure behind a jump, the organization, and most of all, being part of a team working toward the same goal.

Since then, skydiving has taught her plenty — how to stay calm under stress, how to be a better teammate, how to have empathy, and even how to coach herself when things don’t go according to plan.

And apparently, all that learning and hard work is paying off… because Rebecca and her Freefly team just brought home the GOLD! 🥇🔥

But hey, it’s all good fun, as she says!

Meet Rebecca. Meet Freefly & VFS. And meet some of the athletes behind Nationals!

What is MFS? 🪂

MFS stands for Mixed Formation Skydiving, a competitive discipline that combines multiple flying orientations within the same jump.

Teams consist of two performers and a camera flyer, with the performers transitioning through a series of predetermined formations.

And you don’t have to be flying head-down to start competing! MFS offers different categories that allow competitors to progress as their skills develop:

🔹 Intermediate: Belly, back + head-up flying
🔹 Advanced: Belly, back, head-up + head-down flying, with some of the more difficult formations excluded
🔹 Open: Belly, back, head-up + head-down flying, with the full formation draw

This progression allows competitors to start competing in MFS earlier in their flying career and continue advancing as their skills develop.

MFS starts tomorrow! Follow along as we continue highlighting the disciplines you’ll see at USPA Nationals at Skydive Perris! 🔗 Link in bio!

We currently have VERY few teams registered in the Artistic events, and we’d love to see more of our Perris locals jump in!
You don’t need to be the next world champions. Put a team together, compete at a National Championship, have a blast… and with the current field, you might just go home with some hardware. 😎🥇

• MFS: Tomorrow

MEET THE TEAM: BREEZY! 💨

Rebecca Wu, Claire McCauley & Pedro Carneiro, competing in Freefly Open at Nationals!

Together for their second year, this is Breezy’s second Nationals, after making their Nationals debut last year at Skydive Arizona.

Fun fact: Skydiving runs in the family for both Pedro and Claire! Their parents are still active jumpers. And Rebecca and Claire go way back! Claire actually coached Rebecca on static transitions when she was first learning head down!

Something you might not know about Freefly competition: each compulsory move has a high, medium and low difficulty option. Teams can choose an easier version during competition, meaning a lower maximum point score, but as the judges say, they’d rather see a perfectly executed 7.5 than a poorly executed 10.0!

Good luck, team Breezy! 💙

The artistic events are around the corner, but what are they?

Artistic Events include two competitive disciplines: Freefly & Freestyle.

🔹 Freefly features two performers and a camera flyer, combining technical maneuvers, transitions and formations across multiple flying orientations.

🔹 Freestyle brings gymnastics and dance into freefall, with one performer combining flips, spins, rotations and transitions into a choreographed routine that showcases both technical skill and creativity.

Both disciplines include compulsory and free rounds, judged on difficulty, ex*****on, creativity and camera work.

And we have a little extra reason to be excited about Freestyle this year: Perris Nationals Meet Director Scott Smith is a World Freestyle Champion, having claimed the title in 1995 and defended his USPA Freestyle National title in 1996 and 1997. 🏆 Thank you Scott for everything you do and contribute to the skydiving community! It does not go unnoticed! 💙
