Meet the Perris Legends: The Conatser Family

There was really only one way we could end our Meet the Perris Legends series.

With the Conatser family.

Over the last several weeks, we’ve introduced you to a few of the people and teams who have helped shape Perris over the last 50 years. But they represent only a small piece of our history.

There are simply too many people, too many stories, too many accomplishments, and too many characters to ever fit into one series. And really, that’s what makes Perris so special.

The people are what make Perris, Perris.

And behind 50 years of that incredible community is the Conatser family.

In 1976, Diane and Bennie Conatser bought a dusty little airfield in Perris with a completely different dream: they wanted to build a flying community where families could live alongside the runway and taxi their airplanes right up to their homes.

There was just one thing they hadn’t planned for — the skydivers were already here.

Bennie initially assured Diane they would get rid of them. Instead, the skydivers won them over. Diane and Bennie listened to their ideas, learned about the sport, bought bigger airplanes, built facilities, hosted boogies and competitions, and helped turn that little airfield into a place skydivers from around the world would eventually call home.

In 1989, Pat and Melanie Conatser purchased the dropzone from their parents and carried Perris into its next generation. Today, another generation is part of that story, with Pat’s son Ryan working alongside him in flight operations.

Since then, the airplanes have gotten bigger, buildings have gone up, a wind tunnel joined the property, World Champions have trained here, world records have been broken here, and generations of skydivers have walked through the doors.

But through all of that growth, Perris has remained a family business built around a community.

The legends we’ve shared are only a handful of the people who have made this place what it is. There are thousands more —instructors, pilots, competitors, organizers, camera flyers, riggers, staff, fun jumpers, students, friends, and families — who each own a little piece of the Perris story.

So as we celebrate the Conatser family and 50 years of Skydive Perris, we’re really celebrating all of you, too.

Because after 50 years, one thing is pretty clear: The skydivers stayed. 💙

Meet the Perris Legend: Dan BC

We’re pretty sure Dan would prefer we skip this one entirely. Unfortunately for him, you can’t really tell the story of Perris without Dan BC.

Dan made his first jump in 1980 and came to Perris in 1991 to captain Perris AirMoves. His story took a pretty major turn the following year when he survived the 1992 Perris Twin Otter crash. Six months later, he was back competing.

He went on to co-found Arizona Airspeed in 1993 and win six World Championships before eventually finding his way back to Perris — this time to stay.

Dan became General Manager in 2003, and that same year co-founded P3 — Perris Performance Plus with Kate Cooper-Jensen and Tony Domenico. More than 20 years later, both Dan and P3 are still a huge part of Perris.

And somewhere along the way, Dan also managed to rack up 32,000+ jumps, write a book, coach generations of skydivers, organize countless big-ways and records, and earn a spot in the International Skydiving Hall of Fame.

But the accomplishments only tell part of the story.

Dan has spent most of his life in this sport and more than two decades helping take care of this dropzone and the people who call it home. And somehow, after all of it, he still seems genuinely excited about skydiving.

Around here, he’s still just Dan BC — the guy helping run the dropzone, keeping an eye on all of us, and probably hoping we wrap this post up soon.

He probably doesn’t need us to make a big deal about him… But come on, Dan.

You’re kind of a big deal. 💙

Help us congratulate these 11 newly licensed skydivers! They faced their fears, took the leap, and officially earned their place in the skies. Talk about a Halloween treat! 🍬👻

Meet the Perris Legends: Passion8

In the late ’90s, an all-female 8-way team competing at the National level was still a rarity. Passion8 came to change that!

Based right here at Perris, Passion8 competed together from 1996–1999, earning three USPA Nationals medals — silver in 1996, gold in 1997, and bronze in the 8-way Open class in 1999.

Their success took them beyond Nationals, competing at the World Cup in Portugal and winning the 1999 America’s Cup, becoming the first non-Golden Knights team to claim the title since 1985.

And in 1999, they got a pretty unforgettable assignment: forming a “GB” and “75” in freefall for President George H.W. Bush’s 75th birthday jump during Operation Spring C**t.

Four seasons, three Nationals medals, international competition, a world record, and one groundbreaking group of women.

Passion8 showed exactly what women could do at the highest levels of the sport! 💜

Meet the Perris Legends: Dan Pillasch & The Gumbies

They called themselves a “farm team,” but The Gumbies could hold their own against some of the best teams in the country.

Formed at Perris in 1986, The Gumbies were a part-time 4-way team that consistently found themselves near the top at Nationals. In 1987, they took silver in 4-way, finishing just eight points behind the Golden Knights.

Dan Pillasch took over as captain in 1989, and as the roster evolved over the years, The Gumbies developed a reputation for something bigger than competition results. They became a training ground for jumpers looking to make the move to full-time teams.

As they put it: “If you came out of the Gumbies, you were ready.”

The team competed for more than a decade, making their final Nationals appearance in 1997 — fittingly, right here at Skydive Perris.

As for Dan, you can find him walking around the DZ today, still with the biggest smile on his face. And considering The Gumbies summed up their philosophy as “Skydive hard. Laugh harder,” we’d say he’s still living up to it.

Five years ago, Holly never imagined she’d be earning her skydiving license. At 27, she’s gone from stepping way outside her comfort zone to finding a place in the sky that feels like home.

Every jump made the fear got a little quieter, and somewhere along the way, what once felt intimidating became second nature!

Her biggest piece of advice? Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Holly took a little longer than some of the people she started with, but as she puts it, the only person you’re in competition with is yourself. Show up for yourself, do your best, and trust the process.

Congratulations, Holly! Here’s to pushing limits, finding confidence, and discovering just how far you can go! 💙🤩

Meet the Perris Legend- Craig O’Brien 🎥

From World Championship skydives to Hollywood movie sets, Craig O’Brien has had quite the career behind the camera!

Craig made his first jump in 1993, and just four years later, he moved to Perris, took a job as an electrician, and teamed up with skysurfer Tanya Garcia to form Team Firestarter.

Together, they became one of the most successful skysurfing teams in the sport, earning five USPA National titles and three FAI Championship titles. Somewhere along the way, they also got married in 1999!

But Craig’s career behind the lens didn’t stop with skysurfing.

He’s filmed everything from massive world-record formations, including the 400-way, to wingsuit and head-down records. His work has even taken him to Hollywood, with credits on productions like Godzilla, Kingsman, Charlie’s Angels, and Mission: Impossible.
In 2024, Craig received the USPA Gold Medal for Meritorious Service, recognizing his incredible contributions to the sport.

And after all these years, Craig is still a familiar face around Perris, camera in hand, with just as much passion for his work as ever.

He’s spent decades capturing skydiving history, all while making plenty of his own. 💙
