61st E Blue Chip — Day 1 Report | Pewaukee Yacht Club, 9.25.26
Tom Burton (M-9) put on a masterclass on Day 1 of the 61st E Blue Chip on Pewaukee, racing against 22 other top-tier E Scow teams.
The day began with the traditional big breakfast at the brand new Pewaukee Yacht Club. Following the competitors’ briefing and a short postponement, the breeze filled in and the fleet made their way down the lake.
In a 6-8MPH ENE breeze, Burton led Race 1 wire to wire, winning by over 40 seconds over Allan Terhune (I-34), with Nicholas Clemence (V-62) rounding out the top three.
An easterly breeze and slight increase in velocity greeted the fleet for Race 2. Pewaukee-native Tim Krech and team (M-20) battled throughout the race and ultimately came out on top ahead of fellow Minnetonka sailor, Mike Hanson (M-99) and team and the ever-consistent Terhune.
The third and final race of the day brought the best conditions: sunny and 8-10MPH. Burton wowed the race committee and spectators by port tacking the entire fleet. Augie Barkow and family (V-37) led most of the fleet south on the first run and it paid off, rounding well ahead of the rest of the fleet. Nick Clemence and team battled back and put on a show leading at various times throughout the race including the final upwind beat. However, a personal puff from the right allowed Burton to edge Clemence RIGHT at the finish. Rob Terry and his pirate crew (CR-66) rounded out the top three and the fleet headed back to the PYC.
Three races are scheduled for today, with R4 starting at 11:00AM CT.
