Talk about living in color! ✴️

Huge shoutout to Schuster's Farm and Katie Michel for hosting another annual Yoga on the Farm experience! 🌼

It was a “had to be there” evening with joyful movement, beautiful scenery, and plenty of camaraderie! 🤗

🍎🥾🧘 A little sneak peek...we’re working on our next Orange Shoe adventure: fall yoga + hiking + an apple orchard! If crisp fall air, a little movement, and probably an apple cider donut sounds like your kind of day, email Scott at [email protected] and we’ll send you the details as soon as we have them! (Plus other retreats we’ll host throughout the year) 😁

Earlier this summer, a few members of our team and I attended the 2026 Perform Better Summit in Chicago. The summit brings together some of the top fitness professionals, physiotherapists, and performance coaches in the country to share ideas, research, and practical strategies.

Throughout the day, I attended several lectures and hands-on workshops, but two speakers stood out to me for completely different reasons.

The first was Gray Cook (second photo), a world-renowned physiotherapist who has consulted with professional athletes and organizations across the NFL, NBA, MLB, and PGA. His message was remarkably simple:

Quality movement comes first.

Before strength.
Before power.
Before athletic performance.

Move well first.

What’s interesting is that Gray has been teaching essentially the same principles for over 20 years. And they still work. Yet his room only had a handful of attendees.

A few hours later, I attended a presentation titled:

“AI Won’t Replace You...But Someone Using AI Will.”

The room was packed. Standing room only.
The irony?

The presentation started 15 minutes late because the speaker couldn’t get his AI-generated PowerPoint to work.

One room was nearly empty. The other was overflowing.

One speaker was teaching principles that have worked for decades. The other was teaching the newest trend.

It reminded me how often we’re drawn to what’s new instead of what works.

In fitness, people search for the next exercise, supplement, gadget, or breakthrough. But the fundamentals haven’t changed:

Move well.
Get stronger.
Sleep.
Walk.
Eat mostly real food.
Stay consistent.
Do it for years, not weeks.

The same is true in business, relationships, and most things worth pursuing.

As Alex Hormozi says:
“People try shortcuts for a decade until they realize they would’ve gotten there on any path if they had just stuck with it.”

The challenge isn’t finding the perfect path. It’s staying on the path long enough for it to work. Stay on the path.

Meet Pilot Rick 👋👀⬇️

Brent (far right in second photo) was the first team member I ever hired. Fresh out of training professional baseball players in Florida, Brent joined Orange Shoe back in 2008. Today, he’s the owner of the Fitchburg studio.

Rick was the very first client Brent ever trained.

At the time, Rick was 60 years old. He was a pilot. In fact, he even gave Katie and me a ride in his airplane once. (I accidentally cracked the door open mid-flight... so that was our first and last flight together. Sorry about that, Rick—and thanks for keeping your cool!)

Fast forward 18 years.

Several weeks ago, Rick came back to Wisconsin to visit family. Brent still trains him every week... online. Here’s the surprising part. Rick doesn’t have a fancy home gym. Just a pair of 50-pound dumbbells and a commitment to consistently doing resistance training.

When he stopped by the studio, Brent had him deadlift 240 pounds... for multiple reps. Then he knocked out a few sets of pull-ups with a little help from a resistance band. He diligently works on his balance each session. Not bad for someone approaching 80. I’ve been telling clients this for years:

Strength is a skill.

As long as you continue challenging your muscles—even with modest equipment—you’ll retain far more strength than most people realize.

Rick is proof.

His balance is better than many new clients we meet who are 30 years younger. But the thing that impressed me most wasn’t his deadlift. It was the energy. The curiosity. The excitement for life.

He’s approaching his eighth decade, yet he’s still doing the things that bring him fulfillment. That’s what strength training is really about. Giving yourself the strength to keep saying “yes” to the life you want to live.

Make it a great week everyone, I know Rick will!

~Scott and the Orange Shoe Crew

P.S. If anyone wants to give me a second chance at flying with them, I promise I’ll keep my elbow off the door handle. 😄

From training pro athletes to training for life — meet Brent 👋

Back in 2008, when Orange Shoe was still in its early stages, Brent became the first person Scott ever hired. After graduating college and completing an internship in Florida training alongside professional athletes, he brought a passion for fitness, learning, and helping people to the Orange Shoe community. ⛹️‍♂️

Nearly two decades later, Brent’s perspective on health and fitness has evolved in a powerful way — from simply training hard to training for life, longevity, family, and adventure. 🧗‍♂️

“Today, fitness means something different to me. With kids who are 7 and 4 years old, I’m thinking much more about longevity, energy, and being able to fully participate in life with them — not just now, but 10, 20, and 30 years from now. I want to be the dad who can keep up at the park, coach their teams, hike the trails, and stay active as they grow into teenagers and beyond. 🥾

My current routine reflects this shift. These days it includes strength training, interval work on the treadmill or stationary bike, daily mobility and stretching, and even monthly massage to help keep my body feeling healthy and moving well. 🏋️‍♂️

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that fitness should expand your life — not limit it. ‼️

Because of the work I’ve put in over the years, I’m able to fully enjoy experiences like climbing massive sand dunes on the West Coast, hiking through the Redwoods, golfing, exploring new places, and jumping into adventures without feeling held back physically. 🏌️‍♂️

More than anything, I also want to set a positive example for my kids. I want them to see exercise, movement, and taking care of yourself as something enjoyable — just part of a healthy, fulfilling life. 🤲

The goal isn’t just to live longer. It’s to stay capable enough to truly enjoy the life you’re building. ‼️

Because at the end of the day, the real goal of fitness is simple — to build a body that allows you to fully enjoy the people and experiences that matter most.” 👏
