Spring! Yes, it is coming even if winter insists on making a long goodbye. Are you finding yourself connecting with the natural world? Seeing the daffodils popping up from the earth, catching a fresh scent of blossoms as you walk down the street, looking for its source? I have a favorite little spot across from one of my favorite coffee shops where I try to go most mornings and sit to watch the changes taking place in the garden plots. Even here in the city center of Philadelphia, I can experience the wonder of the natural world.
“In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous.” – Aristotle
And that includes our bodies! Our bodies are made up of the material world. In yoga and Ayurveda (the sister science to yoga), we recognize 5 elements of nature – earth, water, fire, air and ether (space) -as the building blocks for everything in the material world, including our bodies. Our bodies are all uniquely some combination of these 5 elements. These elements also show up in the seasons. Spring is the season of earth and water. The ground is thawing, moist, heavy – fertile ground to support the growth of new flowers and plants. The air is growing humid. Spring showers move through. You can feel the wetness, heaviness, but also the lifting energy of spring. It is important to move the body, keep the energy lifting up, especially this time of year.
Tomorrow, we begin our week’s journey together, with reverence for nature, earth and our bodies. Nature has so much to teach us. In our busy lives, getting lost in technology and clicks, we forget our connection to nature.
Shakespeare reminds us of the wisdom that can be gleaned from a walk in the woods –
“And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stone, and good in everything.” (As You Like It, Act II, Scene 1)

Finding my own voice, listening for it and then having the courage to speak it is something I work on everyday.
Daily Inspiration Don’t try to figure out what other people want to hear from you; figure out what you have to say.

Thank you Thich Nhat Hanh for your teachings and your work to promote individual and global peace, compassion, love and understanding.
Matt Schudel's obituary in the Washington Post is a nice summary of Thich Nhat Hanh's life.
We have lost a great teacher and humanitarian. Rest assured his spirit and goodness and wisdom does live on and will continue to guide us towards a better world.
Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk who sought peace and mindfulness, dies at 95 He lived in exile from his native Vietnam for decades and sought to apply Buddhist principles to social and political concerns.

Join me for my virtual Ayurvedic Seasonal Workshop (via Zoom) on Saturday, November 6 10:00-12:00 EST. It is Vata season (fall and early winter) when the elements of air and ether (think wind) are dominant causing skin to dry and crack, digestion to slow, and anxiety to rise. Learn tools, practices and dietary suggestions that will help you stay grounded and strong in your body, calm and focused in your mind, light and joyful in your spirit this vata and holiday season.
