Roberto Duran’s Incredible Five-Decade Career
Very few fighters in history can say they fought across five different decades, but Roberto Duran wasn’t just any fighter—he was a force of nature.
1960s – Made his pro debut at just 16 years old on February 23, 1968, in Panama.
1970s – Dominated as the Lightweight Champion (1972-1979) and famously beat Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980.
1980s – Moved up in weight, winning world titles at welterweight, light middleweight, and middleweight, battling legends like Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, and Iran Barkley.
1990s – Kept fighting, challenging for titles against Hector Camacho and William Joppy.
2000s – Had his final bout on July 14, 2001, a rematch against Camacho at age 50.
With a career spanning 33 years, Duran cemented his legacy as one of the toughest and most relentless warriors in boxing history.
His longevity, skill, and fearless fighting spirit make him one of the sport’s all-time greats.
