Fishtown Beer Runners

The Fishtown Beer Runners combine responsible running and drinking in the interest of science. (sometimes longer sometimes shorter).

History
One afternoon in November, 2007 while running together in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Eric Fiedler told David April about a beer study conducted by Professor Manuel Castillo at the University of Granada, Spain. Eric and David decided to test the study and stopped for a beer at the New Wave Cafe on Allegheny Avenue. Several trial runs later, David and Eric were determined to

spread the word to beer drinkers and runners alike and formed the Fishtown Beer Runners. The first official run, with four runners, took place on December 20, 2007 to the Druid’s Keep. Concept
The Fishtown Beer Runners® combine responsible running and consumption in the interest of science. We gather once a week to run three to five miles, and conclude each run at a pub for a beer or two. Goals
• to encourage people to exercise by running (or walking)
• to provide camaraderie for new runners
• to promote the responsible enjoyment of beer
• to support local tavern owners and breweries

How it Works
There are predetermined destinations (which will change weekly) about three to five miles. The destination is a bar or restaurant. As with a typical 5K, faster runners will lead, followed by slower paced runners, followed by walkers. Run your own pace and get to the bar, no questions asked. There are no dues, and everyone is responsible for buying their own beer. Responsible Consumption
The Fishtown Beer Runners® promote responsible beer consumption. Responsible consumption means drinking within one’s limits. Please note, drinking beer while running will not be permitted. Membership
There is no formal membership, no fees or dues. Fishtown Beer Runners® is open to anyone over 21. New and seasoned runners are welcomed. Elite runners should remember this is primarily a social outing and should plan to do greater distances before meeting. The club is also open to walkers and yes, even nondrinkers. Start Locations

🚨BRUNCH & BEER RUN ALERT!🚨

Join us this Sunday, August 30th at 11am for our next installment of the Brunch & Beer Runners to , one of South Philly’s best gastropubs. We’ll begin at Palmer Park and run along the Delaware River for a roughly 5.5 mile run. Please note: due to the Manayunk Bike Race, we’ve pushed the brunch run to Mount Airy Tap Room to Sunday, September 13th.

South Philadelphia Tap Room is conveniently located near the Snyder stop on the Broad Street subway line, so if you’d prefer to run a different route and meet us at the bar or would like to take the subway home, you’ll have only a few blocks to walk to the train station. Just get to the bar, no questions asked!

Brunch & Beer Runners is a monthly weekend mid-distance run, usually between 6-10 miles, that explores neighborhoods and bars we wouldn’t get to on a regular Thursday evening run and ends in a brunch-time* meal together.

* Not every establishment we run to will offer brunch food specifically, but there will be beer.

🚨BRUNCH & BEER RUN ALERT!🚨

Join us SUNDAY, August 30th, for a Choose Your Own Adventure Brunch & Beer Run to !

We’ll meet at 11am at Lloyd Hall for a run up the Schuylkill River Trail to the Ridge Ave entrance to the Wissahickon River Valley. Option A. run up the bike path through historic Rittenhousetown and take Wissahickon Ave to Mount Pleasant Ave to head straight to the tap room. Option b. For those looking for a little less pavement, at the Ridge Ave entrance, jump on the yellow trail where you’ll pass landmarks such as the hermits cave, lovers leap, and Kitchen Lane Bridge crossing over the Wissahickon Creek to the White Trail up to Carpenters Woods which ends at Mount Pleasant Ave. Option c. Do your own thing. Just remember to get to the bar, no questions asked! Mount Airy Tap Room is a quarter mile walk from both the Carpenter and Richard Allen Lane train stations.

Mount Airy Tap Room has a selection of craft beers, wine, cocktails, and Sunday brunch!

💦 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PHILLY 10k

As we have done every year of the event, FBR is staffing a water station on Sunday, August 23rd for the The Philly 10K. The FBR volunteer water station will be at the same location as previous years, on Passyunk Ave between Reed and Wharton streets. Set-up begins at 5:45 am and we should be done by 9:30 am. We need a few people for early set up and the rest to be there around 6:45 am to finish pouring water and getting ready to support the runners. It requires standing for that whole period and, of course, cheering on the runners. Sign up through the link in our bio, Water Station 2 - Fishtown Beer Runners.
