National Bike Month in May is a time to celebrate biking and the freedom, the joy, and the well-being it imbues within us. It’s a time to encourage ourselves to bike a little bit farther and a time to encourage others to bike a little bit at all. Because we know that when more people ride bikes, life is better for everyone.

Here are some basic things you can do to keep your bike running smoothly between comprehensive tune ups.

Do you know your ABCs? Whether you have an old or new bike, always inspect it prior to riding to make sure everything is working properly. Here's an easy to remember ABC bike check: Air, Brakes, Chain

A is for Air: Properly inflated tires helps prevent flats.

B is for Brakes: Squeeze your front and rear brake levers to make sure that the brakes engage properly and smoothly.

C is for Chain: Check that your chain is engaging with the gears.

Its also a good idea to make sure your saddle is at the proper height, and seat post is locked into place. Check that lights in front and back of your bike are in working order, especially for night riding. A bell is another good thing to have (mandatory in Philadelphia.) And don't forget your helmet.

Haven't had a tune-up on your bike in a while? Schedule an appointment now at either location. Howard St.: Tuesday – Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm, closed for lunch 1-1:30pm or S. Philly: Tuesday - Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 10am - 4pm. We hope to see you and your bike soon!

Wouldn't life be simpler if there was one size tube for every tire size?

A common scenario at the shop: customer walks into the shop wanting to purchase a bike tube. When we ask what size and what kind of valve their response is "just a regular size tube." Just like people, there is no such thing as regular. Bike shops like us stock TONS of tubes in various circumferences and widths. A measuring tape won't tell you what size you need either. To take the guess work out look at your tire. On the side will be its dimensions. For instance: a tire on a Brompton bike is 16 x 1.35 (the 35-349 measurement is the same just a bit esoteric.) You'll also need to know what kind of valve will fit in the rim of your wheel. In this case it's a Schrader valve (the car tire style.) The other common valve is a Presta (the longer skinny one.) One last thing, a tube will stretch to fit different width tires within reason. When in doubt take a picture of your tire, just make sure the measurement and valve are visible.

To pick up a tube please visit one of our locations - Howard Street shop Tuesday – Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm, closed for lunch 1-1:30pm, or our shop in the Bok Building, entrance on Dudley Street Tuesday - Friday 10am-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm. Don't want to fix the flat yourself we can help you with that too. We hope to see and your bike soon!
