Earlier this week, the Bicycle Coalition sent Philadelphia Councilmember Jamie Gauthier a letter of support for increased biking infrastructure near the intersection of S 48th St and Woodland Ave, where OTIS has a proposed project.

So far this year, there have been 35 traffic deaths in Philadelphia. At the current pace, the city is on track to exceed the more than 100 traffic deaths recorded in 2025 unless critical interventions are implemented. Research consistently shows that protected bike lanes dramatically improve safety, reducing the risk of injury by as much as 90% compared to major streets with no cycling infrastructure. With concrete protected bike lanes, the possibility for better outcomes could be even higher.

Decode the Rules of the Road at the Lil' Philly Safety Village Traffic Garden - Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia 05/27/2026

Have you been to our "traffic garden" in Hunting Park? With safety being our number one concern, we know that if we want the world to be our kids’ playground, we have to prepare them for it first! So what better way than starting with an actual playground?

The Lil’ Safety Village is a colorful “traffic garden”, a pint-sized replica of several intersections, meant to be navigated by kids on bikes. We'll be holding programming there all summer starting this Saturday! Meet Lil’ Safety Village Coordinator, Shelby Kim, and sign up for a bike and play session this Saturday:

Decode the Rules of the Road at the Lil' Philly Safety Village Traffic Garden - Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia Guest blog written by Lil’ Philly Safety Village Educator, Shelby Kim Can you remember a time before you could make sense of the seemingly random collection of colors, shapes, and symbols that make up our roads and intersections? Lines, dashes, arrows, changing lights, letters, numbers, oh my! Pai...

Here at the Coalition, we’ve been incredibly excited to celebrate and activate the Schuylkill River Crossing bridge, which will connect Southwest Philadelphia with neighborhoods across the river once it opens this summer!

To ensure that the communities that make up the Southwest Philadelphia neighborhoods are at the forefront of the outreach and activation of this new infrastructure, we’ve brought on a Swing Bridge Ambassador, Mable Bakali to facilitate in-person outreach, bike rides, and bike safety giveaways!

On Monday, the Shapiro Administration announced the 2026 Transportation Set-Aside Grant Recipients.

The Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program provides federal funding for community-based, non-motorized transportation projects—such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, safe routes to school, historic preservation of transportation facilities, and multi-use trails—aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and connectivity while encouraging active transportation and reducing reliance on motor vehicles.
