FLOATIES OR NO FLOATIES? YOU DECIDE!
Stetson Famlee Swim School Instructors DO NOT utilize floaties during our swim lessons, and here is why:
Floaties hinder proper swimming by forcing children into a vertical "drowning" posture instead of a horizontal, streamlined position, which prevents natural balance and core strengthening. They create false confidence, restrict arm movement for proper strokes, and cause reliance on unnatural buoyancy, which delays independent swimming skills and inhibits proper breathing techniques.
Here is how specific floaties and devices hinder proper swimming development:
PROMOTE VERTICAL POSITIONING: Floaties, including armbands and puddle jumpers, keep a child's head above water, encouraging a vertical posture, which is the opposite of the horizontal position required for effective swimming and self-rescue.
RESTRICT MOBILITY: Armbands and bulky vests (like puddle jumpers) prevent kids from practicing proper swimming motions, such as reaching arms forward and coordinating body movements.
PREVENT NATURAL BALANCE: By providing unnecessary buoyancy, these devices stop children from learning how to balance, float independently, or feel their body's natural buoyancy in the water.
DELAY SKILL ACQUISITION: Children often rely on the flotation device, which stunts their ability to learn proper swimming techniques and may cause them to panic if they enter the water without them.
FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY: Floaties can give parents a false sense of security, which can be dangerous, as children can still face risks like overturning in the water.
For learning, it is generally recommended to avoid floaties and prioritize direct, in-water supervision and swimming lessons to build genuine water competency.
