This Day in Hogan History:
July 9, 1953 Ben played the second round of The Open Championship contested at the Carnoustie Championship Course in Angus Scotland. Ben shot a 71 to go along with his 73 during the previous day finishing in a tie for fourth, two strokes behind Dai Rees and Eric Brown. Roberto De Vicenzo shot a 71 to finish alone in third place. Tied with Ben was American Amateur, Frank Stranahan and future Hall of Famer, Peter Thomson. Well known golf commentator, author, golf course designer and Hall of Famer, Peter Alliss, shot 73 – 72 to finish in a tie for twelfth.

Playing on a windless day Hogan seemed to be heading for a great round as he putted for birdies on six of the first eight holes and got to two under par. But on the seventh hole, he hit what called a “dumb shot”. The ball got caught under the lip of a bunker and instead of playing out safely he tried to slug it out and ended up through the fairway on the other side in the rough. He ended up with a bogie five on the hole.

Putting again was Hogan’s biggest challenge and he repeatedly had long rolls miss the cup by less than two inches.

The previous day’s leader, Bobby Locke blew up at the end of the second round shooting a pair of five’s when he reasonably could have shot a pair of fours or even four and three.

Ronald Reagan had it right when he said the freedom of this nation is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is up to us to teach our children and grandchildren the blessings God has bestowed upon the United States of America, and the vast sacrifice represented in the colors of our flag. 🇺🇸 Teach the little ones. Freedom through the eyes of a child is a beautiful thing. 🥹

It's time to give due to Larry Nelson, the greatest golfer no one knows 07/07/2024

Happy Independence Day-thx for your service Larry. Beg to differ with the title of this article. Anyone who knew golf when Larry was playing the PGA Tour knew he could win anytime. Great win in a playoff with Tom Watson and Seve Ballesteros for one of his US Open Championships. Spent some time with the GREAT Ben Hogan as well.

We have so much to be thankful for and today is a great day to remember the sacrifice so many have given for us to have the liberty and freedoms we have. It has come a quite a cost! SO SO GRATEFUL!!!

In this article, Ben talked about the importance of imparting backspin on a golf ball when hitting iron shots. He described the general difference between an America golfer who uses backspin and a foreign golfer who uses very little backspin. He also gave a brief description on the correct procedure of hitting this shot.

This Day in Hogan History:
On May 31, 1953 (tomorrow), Ben played in an exhibition match at the Salem Country Club in Massachusetts along with Sam Snead, Jimmy Demaret and Jackie Burke to benefit the Francis Ouimet Caddie Scholarship Fund.

Having recently won the Masters that year, he was about to become the first player to ever win three professional majors in one year. Hogan and Snead teamed up to defeat Demaret and Burke in an 18-hole Four-Ball Match 2 and 1, even though Burke shot the low round of the day at 2-under par 70. Snead shot a 73, Demaret shot a 75 and Hogan was not able to record a score as he pick up his ball on the ninth hole.

On the ninth hole as Ben was about to hit his drive a young girl walked across the fairway forcing him to hook his drive in the left rough against a rock. Ben took a gamble to try to reach the green with his four iron, but landed on the path, took a bad bounce and ended up in the pond fronting the green. Ben was going to take his drop and a penalty, but decided not to finish the hole as he would have been lying four and the best he could have expected was to finish with a double bogie six and not factor in the Four-Ball competition and the $50 Nassau he had with Sam Snead. The club nicknamed the left rough on the ninth hole “Hogan’s Alley”.

Pictured is from left to right, Ben Hogan, Jack Burke, Francis Ouimet, Lionel MacDuff, Jimmy Demaret and Sam Snead prior to teeing off at the exhibition match held at Salem Country Club on May 31, 1953.
