Here we all are (over 1,300 pounds!) from the last session .... except for Steve. He's taking the photo. After warmups Steve's back was still not right so he became the gyoji/referee, side coach, and timekeeper.

Our next session is Sunday September 27th 11h15-12h45 at 550 Kimberton Road in Phoenixville

This guy was excited to have other people to Sumo with. Keeping the club going for 3.5 years has been humbling. Coordinating schedules has proven the hardest part. This Sunday the 13th is an example. The dojo is closed. Disappointment seeps in. But open on the 27th of September 11h15-12h45. Joy begins to rise.

See you on the dohyo Sunday September 27th 11h15-12h45 at 550 Kimberton Road in Phoenixville.

During our last session Zane stepped back on the dohyo!. 50 pounds lighter and fast ... very fast at the tachiai. He trained almost every week for a year and then had to take about 18 months off ... Life happens. But he is back with a tachiai like a human spear.

Come join Zane on the dohyo!

On Sunday Everett stepped on to the dohyo for either the fourth or fifth time. This is Everett. He has great flexibility to go along with size. He is learning how to use his size. Get low, aim for the inside and drive forward like a human spear. We are all excited for his journey on the path of Sumo (Sumodo).

Come join Everett on the dohyo!

From Sunday. This is our newest member ... Herbert. He has never done any martial arts before but ... he was Sumo curious. He saw a member wearing a club T-shirt in a store and asked. This past Sunday was his second time on the dohyo. We hope he keeps stepping on to the dohyo.

This is what the first 20 minutes of tomorrow's Sumo training will be.

It's our warm-up segment. A combination of isometrics, statics, dynamics, and cardio. It's designed to loosen, activate, and warm all the muscles and joints you will use during Sumo ... from head to toe.

At the end you should feel a flush in your skin, your wind should be up, and a light glisten on the skin. No pain or dizziness.

This sequence incorporates balance, flexibility, and strength. The three physical legs of the Sumo stool. Most of these exercises incorporate multiple elements because in Sumo you don't move your body in muscle isolation, you move as a whole in multiple planes. The goal here is not build but to activate and be ready for the heavier stuff that is coming.

This sequence also allows the coach to observe people's limitations, injuries, and capabilities for that day. This allows the coach to adjust the further training for each person if needed.

Time: 11h15-12h45
Location: 550 Kimberton Road in Phoenixville (Gracie Jiu-Jitsu)

“Winning is relative. Excellence is absolute. “

“To win you measure yourself against an opponent. To be excellent you measure yourself against an ideal.”

This video applies to Sumo and to life. The posited question “Do you just want to win, or do you want to be good?” It’s a question we normally ask newcomers to The Phoenixville Sumo Club.

So, watch the video … think about your answer, and then come step on the dohyo this Sunday August 16th at 11h15-12h45 – 550 Kimberton Road in Phoenixville PA
