When you challenge bat path from multiple angles, hitters learn to adjust while keeping the barrel in the zone. Train the swing to be functional

For my softball players / families

I have this debate with a lot of my softballers and I think it’s kinda valid.

Softball is played on a 200ft field starting at 10u all the way through college and AUSL.

The college World Series and the AUSL (I’m currently watching OKC vs Portland) has sooooo many home runs it’s crazy. Almost every inning. Plus some of these girls are hitting them 100+ ft over the fence…

I think the evolution of softballs and women’s sports has evolved tremendously the past 20 years. Look at the WNBA and women’s pro soccer. These girls on TV are pure athletes and still playing on the same field from 10u is tough pill for me to swallow.

Don’t they think that there should be some adjustments the older these girls get? Maybe can’t use -10 anymore or use wood bat in professional? Make a different ball? Or a different style bat that is more “dead” when they get to college. Move the fields back in college or pro?

I love the growth of the game and love seeing girls compete at a high level. Softball is exciting to watch, way more than baseball. It’s faster and the girls have a much more upbeat energy through the whole game. But I feel like there’s a flaw in the system when they get older.

This is just a thought I have. Just seeing these AUSL girls use the same exact bats that my 12U girls use is crazy to me lol. Even crazier they play on the same exact fie, with the same exact ball. Idk. Let me know your thoughts.

Rhythm creates athletic movement. It allows your body to organize itself naturally instead of forcing positions that may look great on video but might disappear when the game speeds up.

A swing doesn’t earn success because it’s aesthetically pleasing. It earns hits because it’s functional, repeatable, adjustable, and on time.

Mechanics matter but they should support rhythm

Stop chasing the prettiest swing.

I sometimes get the best swings out of the hitters when they hit the punching bag. Their best cuts and most explosive cuts are there. When we get to a ball, the idea of “making contact” doesn’t let them freely rip like this.

So I tell them, hit the punching bag MORE than hitting a ball. Atleast for a couple weeks. Build the habit and TRUST of ripping through the zone rather than getting in the box to simply make contact.

Contact will never go away. As long as you have eyes and a controlled body, contact shouldn’t be the biggest challenge. Train to rip through the zone at your full potential. It’ll be a lot easier to tune up the swing when it’s aggressive, not when it’s passive.

Shared lessons shouldn’t mean one athlete is swinging while the other stands around waiting.

Too many coaches charge premium prices for shared lessons, but one player spends half the session watching.

Each player rotates through structured stations with a purpose, building swing mechanics, timing, bat speed, vision, and feel. So there are no wasted minutes. Every station has a goal, and every athlete leaves with hundreds of quality reps instead of just watching someone else train.
