Cambridge Lakes Karate

Cambridge Lakes Karate Karate is a great way for children to build self confidence and get fit, while also learning valuable self defense skills. We make learning karate fun!

Cambridge Lakes Karate is an ongoing class that runs year round. The students progress through belt ranks while learning to set and achieve personal goals, diffuse peer conflicts, develop better concentration and focus, as well as improve their physical fitness, self-discipline, and self image. They learn practical safety awareness and cutting edge self defense skills. Our students learn Isshinryu Karate, a style of martial art developed in Okinawa, Japan during the 1950s by its founder, Tatsuo Shimabuku (1906-1975). We are a affiliated with The Kyusho-Jitsu Kenkukai Organization. (KJK)

The KJK is an association of martial arts schools that study and practice the Dillman Method of Pressure Point fighting under the instruction of Grand Master Instructor, Chris Thomas. The schools within our organization are comprised of many different styles, backgrounds, and experience. However, we have all found that the Dillman Method of training and practice brings true meaning and effectiveness to our art. The KJK assists us by ensuring that the instructors all understand the appropriate principles, concepts, and theory, so that they properly teach the Dillman Method within their own schools. The KJK holds regular training opportunities and events for instructors and students alike to learn, practice, and (best of all) socialize with others who share our love of this intriguing art. Our classes are provided by the Cambridge Lakes Learning Center's School's Out program. We are not a private school. (I don't have my own dojo somewhere with dragons on the windows and cool posters on the walls. -Right now, I have a full-time job that I actually like and takes up too much time to start a private school.) So I'm very grateful that School's Out allows us to provide these classes.

Hello everyone,

It is with my deepest regrets that I have to inform you that this Tuesday's Karate Promotions will have to be CANCELED.

This weekend, I experienced a health emergency that requires immediate surgery and several weeks of recovery, making it impossible to hold this Session's Promotions.

When I woke up on Friday morning, I noticed a strange shadow in my left eye. I contacted my Ophthalmologist and scheduled an immediate appointment. -It turns out that I have a torn retina in my left eye which needs to be repaired as soon as possible, before it becomes completely detached.

Surgery is scheduled for Monday and will likely need several weeks of recovery before I can do much.

Rather than have everyone return for one night, in the middle of July, for Promotions, I will instead present each student with their new certificate, stripe, or belt, on the FIRST night of class in September.

(There will be no cost for these Promotions.)

All of our students have worked very hard, and I really hate to end the Session this way. However, this surgery, and its recovery period, need to be taken care of as quickly as possible. -I wish I could have given you more notice.

Please except my sincerest apologies and I hope to see you all again in the Fall.

At Cambridge Lakes Karate, we pride ourselves on providing valuable skills with consistent fees and reasonable pricing. Learning karate shouldn't be a financial burden for families.

Parents warn others to ask about testing rules, fees and contracts before committing to kids’ martial arts programs.

As I explained in class this week, a good friend and training partner passed away last week.

For those who know John Shaw and would like to pay their respects, here is the information about his funeral services.

John Shaw will be greatly missed. 🥋

John’s committal ceremony will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, November 21st at Fort Sheriden National Cemetary located at: Vettman Road, Lake Bluff, IL. 60044. Please follow the signs directing you to the cemetary/ forest preserve entrance and then follow the sign for funeral procession. Please do NOT park in the forest preserve parking lot. The ceremony will be held at the commital shelter which is a covered, open air pavillion.
This will be followed by a Celebration of Life from 3:00pm - 5:00pm at the Highland Park Memorial VFW Post 4737 (located in the Wooden Nickel) at: 444 Lakeview Ave. , Highwood, IL. 60040. Hors d’oeuvres and an Open Bar will be provided.
Everyone is welcome at both venues.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the VFW post if you wish. They are providing the food and bar at cost in gratitude for John’s military service.

Due to a family emergency, tonight's Advanced Karate Class will be cancelled.

We will have a make-up class on Tuesday, November 26th at 7:00. The advanced students will stay afterwards until approx. 8:30 to work on kata.

I apologize for this inconvenience​ and hope to get back to training soon.
