ATTN: Head Coach Casey Trias Steps Down, Assistant Coach Denise Topete Takes Over as Interim Head Coach
-----
Beginning on August 15th, 2015, Assistant Coach Denise Topete will officially begin her role as the new Interim Head Coach for the Pittsburg High School Cross Country team as former Head Coach Casey Trias accepts an opportunity to serve our country as an Officer in the United States Army. In addition to Coach Denise Topete stepping into the role as Head Coach, the PHS Track & Field Distance coach, Kevin Thompson, will be added as an assistant coach to complete the staff.
Statement from Coach Casey Trias:
“I would like to thank the Pittsburg Unified School District for giving me the opportunity to coach such an amazing team this past year. It is definitely an experience that I will forever cherish in my heart as I move forward in my career. Commissioning as an officer in the U.S. Army is a vision I’ve had for many years now. Over these past few years as I explored other opportunities, I continued to be reminded of that same vision to serve our country in the back of my mind. After many months of more thought and reflection, I decided to finally submit my application packet.
As I began the application process eight months ago, I initially planned on completing this upcoming season and then beginning my career in the U.S. Army in December to give both the Cross Country team and Pittsburg High School plenty of time to transition to the following season as I stepped down. But as some people may be familiar with, when the government says it is time to go, there is very little wiggle room to argue. With that said, I will be leaving to begin my training on August 17th, 2015. Coming to this decision was an extremely tough choice for me and I appreciate all of the support I have received from athletes, parents and fellow colleagues within the school district.
Last summer when I was granted the opportunity to coach my alma mater high school, I couldn’t think of a better way to give back to the community that molded me into the person I am today. I spent over twenty years growing up in the city of Pittsburg and four of those years participating in the sport of Cross Country. After assisting as a volunteer coach for about five years while also studying at UC Davis, I eventually was then hired on as the Head Coach last summer. Using the knowledge and experiences I gained while attending both PHS and UC Davis, I wanted to pioneer a new culture of excellence and ambition within my the students at my alma mater using the sport of cross country. At the end of the day, I not only wanted to create a culture that inspires individuals to become better athletes, but also to become better people overall. After what was accomplished both in and out of the sport last season by the many student-athletes of the team, I firmly believe that we are well on our way to creating this culture.
As I transition away from my role as head coach, I hope that all involved athletes, parents, school staff and community members continue to support the movement towards this culture that began last fall season. I put my entire trust in Denise Topete and Kevin Thompson and firmly believe that they will do an amazing job at continuing to build a culture of excellence within the Pittsburg High School Cross Country team."

Casey Trias' last day in the role of Head Coach will be on Friday, August 14th, 2015. The practice schedule will continue as previously announced until further notice.
