Ismael Rivera, one of the most famous Soneros of all time, who got famous for his incredible mastery of Soneo, the syncopated singing style in Son and Salsa music, was Puerto Rican! This album, one of his very best, is called El Sonero Mayor, and he clearly deserves the name. The other Soneros worth mentioning as competitor for El Sonero Mayor across all time is Benny Moré, the Cuban who made soneo famous.

First Fridays Casino y Kizomba is back! This month we also have a Cuban Pasos Sueltos (steps that need no partner) workshop by Matías Jonsson with live music by Hugo Cruz before the party. Some people are surprised to know but Pachanga is originally from Cuba, danced to Charanga music.

Intermediate skill level for Casino recommended, but versatile salsa dancers of other styles are welcome to attend as well.
These five Cuban dance styles are essential parts of the flavor of dancing to Timba music, which is the result of continued developments of evolution from Son Montuno to Songo to Timba inside of Cuba. At any party where people dance Casino steps and turns, it is important to have also the flavorful and authentic rhythmical interpretations for "Pasos Sueltos" (free steps) from the tapestry of Cuban dance culture. Shines in New York Salsa are actually distinct from Cuban Pasos Sueltos because they include lots of African American Jazz influence.
