I never set out to be a photographer.
In fact, I never set out to be a creative.
I existed in healthcare for most of my life. I was comfortable there.
During the spring and summer of 2011 things started to slowly change.
The guy that I was dating at the time was a youth baseball umpire. Through that relationship, I became deeply enmeshed in youth baseball. After a while, I broke out the camera to document our baseball adventure.
A few years later, the two of us married and running our own team, I decided to resurrect that hobby. I had been using a point-and-shoot camera for a while. Then my iPhone had a better photo quality, so I used that.
Then I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to graduate to a “good camera” for the baseball photos. He got me one for Christmas that year. The first opportunity I had to try it out was at an indoor girl’s baseball tournament a few days after Christmas.
The following spring baseball season was filled with me gleefully learning the craft to present the photos at the end-of-season banquet like I’ve done every year.
Soon after, I started shooting high school football and then was brought on to freelance for the Mon Valley Independent.
I never set out to do any of this, but here I am and I love it.
Why the name Miss Jen?
I didn’t pick that, it was given to me by all the baseball kids. It’s who I am now.
