Friday Florida Facts: There’s more than one kind of mangrove. Southwest Florida has three, and you can tell them apart from a kayak. 🛶

🌿 Red mangrove: Grows right at the water’s edge, standing on curved, arching roots called prop roots. These are the ones you paddle past most often.
🌿 Black mangrove: Usually a little farther back. Look for hundreds of pencil-like roots poking up out of the mud. They help the tree get air in waterlogged soil.
🌿 White mangrove: Farthest from the water. Its rounded leaves have two small bumps where the leaf meets the stem.

Want a bonus clue? Black mangrove leaves get rid of extra salt, and sometimes you can see salt crystals on top of the leaves. All three help hold the shoreline together, and their roots shelter young fish, crabs, and the birds that feed on them.

Our guides love pointing these out on kayak tours. Once you know what to look for, every shoreline starts to look different.

Spotted on Saturday’s kayak tour: a dolphin acting extra curious and playful. 🛶🐬

Our group stopped paddling, kept our distance, and watched for a few minutes. While the tour group watched, our guide Tye explained the dolphins behavior. While we try to stay 2-3 boat lengths back at all times, sometimes they come in to see us out of curiosity. Tye also explains that a dolphin slapping their tail means to give them more space.

That’s one of our favorite parts of a guided tour. You don’t just see wildlife. You learn what you’re looking at, what their behavior is, and understand the why behind it.
Every tour is different, and we never know what we may see. That’s part of the fun!

Windy day after a cold front? Head for the mangroves. 🌿

Fall brings some of our clearest water of the year. But the clear, cool days after a front often come with a stiff north wind, which can make open water choppy and tiring.

That’s when the mangrove tunnel is worth slowing down for. The mangroves block much of the wind, so the water stays calmer. And with less rain stirring things up, you can often see right to the bottom. Some things to look for when you go:
🌊 Seagrass swaying in the shallows
🦀 Small crabs on the mangrove roots
🐟 Little fish darting around the mangrove roots, which act as a nursery ground for smaller species

☀️Sunday Scenery from Don Pedro Island State Park⛱️

As fall starts settling in and the sun drifts down in the southern sky our waters start to cool off. Cold fronts also bring in dryer air and as we move out of the rainy season our inshore bays start to become even clearer. The clear water makes it even easier to spot our local species!
