As we continue our centennial series we are proud to highlight long-time Friends of Swimming volunteer and YMCA JETS Swim Team supporter Bob Baish. Whether cheering on his daughter at YMCA Nationals, or helping fundraise to meet the evolving needs of JETS swimmers, Bob has played a key role in strengthening the Y's presence in the world of youth aquatics. Bob said he is optimistic about the future of the Y because of staff leadership and the resources available to young swimmers.

"We have such beautiful facilities in Plainfield, Morris, and Shorewood, and the money that has been raised for the new facilities shows how receptive these communities have been to Y. The hope is young people follow in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents," he said.

Happy Friday from our Kid Zone friends!

Today, we’re taking a trip back to 1995 to look at where it all began. In November of 1995, the Plainfield Area YMCA was chartered as a new branch of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA. In partnership with Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, the YMCA’s before and after school Kid Zone program served students at Walker’s Grove and Crystal Lawns Elementary Schools.

Nearly 30 years later, our Kid Zone program is now serving more than 1,100 kids each school day across 8 school districts. Kid Zone continues to be an important part of the YMCA’s commitment to supporting our community!

As an industry leader in aquatic safety for more than 100 years, the Y is the perfect place to begin a career as a lifeguard or swim instructor. And, as we prepare for our busy fall season, we are excited to host another employment open house! Attendees will be able to participate in interviews and complete required swim testing in one session.

We’re taking it back to 1980 when seventeen-year-old David Sims, a member of the Joliet JETS YMCA Swim Team coached by Tim Hill, qualified for the Summer Olympics in the 1500-meter freestyle. Unfortunately, the United States’ boycott of the 1980 Olympic Games prevented David from competing on the World Stage.

We are also proud to share that last week Coach Hill was inducted into the American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Coach Hill, and thank you for the lasting impact you’ve made on generations of swimmers and the Joliet community! Located within the C.W. Avery Family YMCA, the Endeavor Health Physical Therapy Clinic has been an invaluable resource for the Y community since 2022. And now we are excited to highlight Endeavor staff member Will Thompson!

Will has more than two decades of experience in healthcare, including the last three and a half years assisting physical therapy patients at the Endeavor clinic. He said that the community-building aspect of the Y has offered one of the more unique work experiences of his career.

We are excited to continue our centennial spotlight series with YMCA Board Member Dan Stevenson! Dan served as Greater Joliet Area Board Chair from 2018-19 and has been a strong supporter of the YMCA Gala and Mission Strong Golf Classic, helping to ensure nobody is turned away from the Y due to the inability to pay. Dan says one of his favorite Y memories remains seeing his daughter experience YMCA summer camp as a counselor.

"She was hesitant to work with the kids and did not realize the impact she was having on them until she returned from vacation and had one of the young girls run up shouting 'Ms. Meg!' and gave her a huge hug," Dan said. "Regardless of what external factors impact us, family remains the center for everyone at the Y. Having a place/entity to help families focus on positive interactions, activities, and relationships in a safe space is key."
