Toys "R" Us Opens 120 New Stores as Adults Drive America's Toy Boom

Toys "R" Us is officially launching its biggest U.S. brick-and-mortar expansion in nearly a decade, with plans for 120 new stores ahead of the 2026 holiday season. The expansion comes as adults increasingly buy toys for themselves, with adults accounting for 55% of toy sales. Nostalgia plus collecting are helping reshape who the toy store is designed to serve.

The expansion is being carried out with Go! Retail Group, increasing the Toys "R" Us footprint from 40 stores to as many as 160 locations nationwide. Instead of recreating the warehouse-style many shoppers remember, the new locations will use smaller boutique formats approximately 3,500 to 7,500 square feet, reflecting a more focused approach to modern retail.

The U.S. toy industry is experiencing its strongest performance in six years, with overall sales rising 17% during the first half of 2026. Purchases involving adult recipients grew faster at 25%. These so-called "kidult" shoppers have become a major market for Pokémon merchandise, LEGO sets, trading cards, with other pop-culture collectibles driven by nostalgia.

Toys "R" Us is experimenting with Creator Studios at five locations, including Mall of America and American Dream. The spaces will allow influencers, content creators, with toy companies to stage product reveals or live launches. The strategy positions the retailer not only as somewhere to buy toys, but as a destination for collectors who never stopped loving them.

The Savage Land could finally make its live action MCU debut

Reports have circulated that Ka-Zar will be introduced as a character in Black Panther 3, along with the Savage Land. The character is known in the comics as the Lord of the Savage Land, while the Savage Land itself is a hidden tropical region located in Antarctica, home to prehistoric creatures and Antarctic Vibranium.

The rumored plot reportedly involves a space related crisis that pulls T'Challa into contact with Ka-Zar, giving Marvel a workaround for the primal, jungle hunt vibe it once wanted from Kraven before Sony blocked that idea. Black Panther 3 is currently set for December 15, 2028.

Marvel's new Midnight Universe puts a horror twist on Spider-Man, X-Men and Fantastic Four

Midnight Spider-Man #1 goes on sale October 7, 2026, written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson with art by ScieTronc in his Marvel debut. It follows a young Peter Parker who is transformed into a hideous spider hybrid by Oscorp as the company chases eternal life.

The series launches Marvel's Midnight Universe alongside Midnight X-Men and Midnight Fantastic Four, and all three debut issues arrive the same day. Are you picking up Midnight Spider-Man?
