Dear Dojo Students,

Today marks 15 years since the passing of WIKF Founder, Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki.

Sensei Suzuki dedicated his life to preserving and teaching authentic Wado Karate. He was a demanding instructor who expected discipline, precision, and a relentless commitment to technical excellence. His standards were high because he believed that true progress came through hard work, attention to detail, and respect for the traditions of our style.

As members of the Academy of Classical Karate and the Wado International Karatedo Federation (WIKF), we have the privilege and responsibility of carrying his teachings forward. Let us honor his memory by training with purpose, maintaining the highest technical standards, and preserving the principles of Wado for future generations.

His legacy lives on every time we step onto the dojo floor.

Sen Sen no Sen- pronounced (sehn sehn no sehn) - 先々の先

In karate, Sen Sen no Sen is the highest level of initiative. It means recognizing your opponent’s intention before their attack has fully begun and taking action first.

This principle extends far beyond the dojo.

Life will always present obstacles. Challenges aren’t interruptions to the journey—they’re part of it. When we expect resistance instead of being surprised by it, we stop spending energy reacting to every setback.

Like Sen Sen no Sen, we can anticipate challenges, prepare our mindset, and choose intentional action over emotional reaction. By taking initiative before circumstances force us to respond, we maintain momentum and adapt with purpose.

Every season of life offers an opportunity to grow. The more proactive we become, the less resistance controls us, allowing us to make the most of each season rather than simply endure it.

Don’t wait for life to happen to you. Meet it with intention before it demands a reaction.

先の先 Sen no Sen - (sen-noh-sen)

Meaning:
“Taking the initiative at the moment your opponent commits to their attack.”

Unlike waiting to block first, Sen no Sen is about recognizing the instant your opponent has decided to attack and intercepting them before their technique fully develops. It’s not guessing—it’s reading intention, timing, and distance.

In Wado Ryu:
Sen no Sen emphasizes:

Perfect timing

Maai (distance)

Calm awareness

Entering rather than retreating

Imagine your opponent begins stepping in to throw a reverse punch. Instead of waiting for the punch to arrive, you enter with your own technique as they commit, disrupting their attack before it can land.
