Ready for sword sparring ???
Eye-level leadership means meeting students where they are, not where we want
them to be.
That doesn’t mean lowering standards. It means adapting the approach while keeping
expectations high. And that’s harder than it sounds.
1. A confident student gets pushed harder.
Some students walk in ready to be challenged. They want to be corrected. They thrive
when the bar is raised. For these students, the best thing an instructor can do is
demand more. Hold them to a higher standard. Push them past what they think they can
do.
2. A hesitant student gets more encouragement.
Other students need to be built up before they can be pushed. They’re not ready for
intense correction yet because they’re still figuring out if they belong. For these
students, the best thing an instructor can do is celebrate small wins, build trust, and
create safety before adding challenge.
3. Both students improve. Just through different paths.
This is what most schools miss. They treat every student the same way regardless of
where they are emotionally, developmentally, or in their training. But a 5-year-old who
just walked in needs different language, energy, and pacing than a 12-year-old
preparing for black belt testing .
4. Great coaches adjust in real time.
Eye-level leadership isn’t a script. It’s reading the student in front of you and knowing
what they need in that moment. Sometimes it’s a push. Sometimes it’s patience. The
skill is knowing the difference and shifting seamlessly between the two .
Most schools supervise. We coach. And coaching means seeing every student as an
individual.

Integrity means showing up even when you don’t feel like it. That’s where character builds. Training when it’s difficult, boring, or inconvenient develops the integrity muscle that serves students everywhere.
We call it eye-level instruction. It means meeting students where they are, seeing what they need, and making sure every single one of them improves at least one thing every class.
We’re preparing for belt testing this week, and in true Master Chang’s fashion, we have to have some fun doing it!
