Yes her name is Jacob. Yes that is also my name. No I did not plan this. 😂
But that is not even the best part of this video.
I handed this five year old a ten pound brick and asked her to get it all the way across the pool. She obviously cannot swim with that much weight pulling her down but watch what she does instead. She bounces off the bottom, takes a breath when she needs it, and problem solves her way across using whatever tools her body has available.
This is what happens when you stop limiting kids to just swimming and start challenging them in ways that build real water competency.
If your child is already a solid swimmer this is for you. Once the basics are locked in it is time to start making things harder. Add weight. Add distance. Add obstacles. Anything that forces them to think, adapt, and problem solve in the water rather than just perform a stroke on command.
This drill was inspired by Coach Sean, also known as inside our swim instructor community .
He calls drills like this underwater problem solving and it is built around breath work and pushing kids to find solutions rather than just following instructions. Sean is one of the most creative thinkers I have come across in this industry and this drill completely changed how I challenge my more advanced swimmers.
This is for every parent and every instructor who has a child that has already mastered the basics. There is so much more you can do once swimming alone is no longer the challenge.

The industry wants you to believe that a life jacket is enough. It is a lie. Parents, stop buying into the false sense of security. Those arm floaties are just colorful plastic that teaches your child to panic when they hit the water alone. True safety is not something you buy at a big box store. It is a skill you forge through sweat and discipline. Are you raising a swimmer or just a floater?
The difference could save their life. God gave them a body built for the water. Let us stop trusting the foam and start trusting the training.

How to correct baby hands position while they’re floating.
If I see one more pair of leaky goggles today, I am calling a mandatory goggles free lesson.
Parent allow to much fancy gear and wonder why they still panic when water touches their face. Real confidence does not come from a suction cup around your eyes. It comes from knowing how to handle the environment.
Stop buying more gear. Start building more grit!
