We do not just teach swimming. We lead a ministry of safety. Every child in the water is a life we are called to protect. The work is hard and the days are long but we serve a God who gives us the strength to stand in the gap.

Ridge is 1 year old and does things his own way.

He jumps when he wants. Explores when he wants. And honestly, I stopped trying to control every moment.

Instead, I stayed close, kept him safe, and let him figure things out.

Somewhere during this lesson, he rolled himself onto his back and floated. No help. No prompting. Just confidence, curiosity, and repetition.

Kids like Ridge remind me that progress doesn’t always come from more instruction. Sometimes it comes from giving them the space to learn.

πŸ’™ Keep them safe. Stay close. Trust the process.

Teaching a child to take a breath while swimming is a huge milestone.

Proper breathing helps kids stay calm, swim farther, and feel more confident in the water. Like any skill, it takes patience, practice, and lots of repetition.

Confidence around water is important, but supervision is essential. Always stay within arm’s reach and keep water safety the priority. πŸ’™

Some kids you guide. Some kids you just keep up with. πŸ˜‚

Ridge is one year old and has zero interest in being told what to do in the pool. He jumps when he wants. He moves how he wants. And honestly? I stopped fighting it pretty quickly.

Because here is what I have learned. A child with this much confidence in the water is a gift. You just have to know what to do with it.

So I stayed close, kept him safe, and let him explore. And somewhere between the first jump and the last one in this video something clicked. He went in, went under, and rolled himself right up to a back float. Nobody helped him. Nobody guided him. He just did it.

That is what happens when you stop trying to control every moment and start working with the child in front of you.

Overconfident kids like Ridge tend to get to their goals faster than almost anyone else. Because they are never afraid to try. You just have to be right there when they do. πŸ’™

You cannot out stubborn a one year old who loves jumping in the pool. Trust me I tried. πŸ˜‚

Ridge is one of those kids. Overconfident, fearless, and absolutely convinced he already knows what he is doing. And you know what? Sometimes you just have to let them cook.

So that is exactly what I did. I kept him safe, I stayed right there, and I let him explore. No forcing. No holding back. Just a little boy doing what he loves in a place where he could not get hurt doing it.

And watch what happens.

The first roll to float in this video? Rough. He was not there yet. But because I kept letting him jump, kept letting him move, kept letting him feel the water on his own terms, by the last jump in this video he goes under and rolls himself right up to a back float. Eyes up. All on his own.

Was it perfect? No. But it happened because I got out of his way and let him figure it out.

This is what building confidence actually looks like. It is not always clean. It is not always textbook. But when you meet a child where they are at and let them lead a little, the progress comes fast and it sticks.

By the time Ridge is two and a half nobody is going to believe what this kid can do in the water. And it all started here. πŸ’™
