I’ve spent 25 years working in healthcare and wellness, and I’ve noticed a gap.

We have many valuable strategies for taking care of ourselves.

But they are often for:
-When there’s dedicated time and space
-After the workday or shift
-Only after things have gotten bad enough that we know we need help

Those resources are important and absolutely have their place.

But what about all the hours we spend ON THE JOB? Especially in professions where we’re expected to stay sharp, make decisions, communicate effectively, and perform under pressure?

Our nervous system is influencing how we show up during those hours too.

So I started asking a different question:
Are there realistic ways to work with our nervous system while we’re actually working?

-Not lengthy practices
-Not necessarily stepping away
-And not waiting until we’re overwhelmed or for everything to be perfect and peaceful

Quick, proactive strategies that can be integrated into the workday to support both performance and wellness.

👉🏼Because the more demanding the job, the more important I think it is to talk about what happens during the hours we’re doing it.

👉🏼Stress is not the enemy.

At its core, our stress response is about survival, safety, and perceived threat. When we simplify stress to “stress is bad,” I think it can actually work against us.

👉🏼Not only can it stigmatize stress, but our perception of stress can shape how it affects us. The fascinating work of Dr. Alia Crum has shown just how powerful our perceptions can be in influencing our physiology.

👉🏼It can also make us feel bad about ourselves, as though we’re weak or flawed in some way because we can’t just “calm down.”

Even when we’re having a hard time relaxing or downshifting, our systems are trying to protect us.

That doesn’t mean we want to stay there.

It means understanding what’s happening can help us work with our system instead of working against it.

That shift in perspective can make a world of difference.

It has for me.

I was up quite early this morning to present for Ohio’s First Responder Wellness Program. I shared an approach to help first responders stay sharp, steady, and well that is proactive, body-based, quick, and designed for use on duty and in uniform. I broke down the “why, what, and how” of my Performance & Resilience Tactics framework.

Grateful for the opportunity to support this great initiative. 🙏🏼✨

Wellness isn’t just about relaxation. It’s about regulation.

Activation (or what I call High Gear) exists for a reason, and the goal isn’t to eliminate it.

High Gear can initially support vigilance, action, speed, and at times be lifesaving.

The challenge isn’t entering High Gear. It's losing the ability to downshift from it.

The goal of regulation is flexibility: the ability to move between gears and avoid getting stuck in High Gear.

This helps preserve access to attention, decision-making, communication, and performance when it matters most, while supporting long-term resilience and well-being.

👉🏼You can’t “out-grit” what is happening at the nervous system level.

I was just having a conversation with a client about how often we override our body’s signals in order to keep up and keep going. Eventually, there is a price to pay in some way, whether that’s our health, performance, relationships, or even our sense of joy.

✨Mindset, attitude, and determination matter, but at some point, we have to learn how to work with our nervous system instead of constantly fighting against it.

So surreal to see my article published in Police Chief Magazine as part of their May Focus on Officer Wellness section. ✨

“Readiness Through Regulation” explores how persistent high-arousal states can impact performance and long-term wellbeing in policing, and how brief, body-based regulation skills (what I refer to as “mini downshifts”) can help break up prolonged high gear while remaining fully engaged on duty.

Really grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this conversation. 🙏🏼

♥️Grateful to turn a year older yesterday.

It made me reflect on why I’ve been quieter across all social media for a while.

✨I’ve been honoring my need to take some space.

✔️To step out of the constant “on.”
✔️To not feel the need to share or respond in real time.
✔️To let my system settle a bit.

We don’t talk about that enough.

There’s a lot of value in showing up consistently, but there’s also value in knowing when to step back.

✨Giving yourself that permission isn’t falling behind. It’s often what allows you to come back more grounded, clear, and intentional.

I had a great time connecting with new people and expanding my perspective at a workshop this past weekend.

At a time when the world can feel heavy both personally and collectively, it was refreshing to come together and explore powerful questions:

👉🏼Are we defined by our circumstances, or do we have more agency than we realize?
👉🏼Can we recognize and shift some of the patterns and narratives we’ve unconsciously picked up along the way?

I walked away with renewed energy, meaningful conversations, and new friendships.♥️

This is not about positive thinking, it’s physiology.

Research from Stanford psychologist Dr. Alia Crum shows that how stress is framed can change physiological responses — not just how we feel, but how the body actually performs.

👉🏼 When stress is framed as damaging, it changes how it shows up in the body.
✔️ When it’s framed as a normal, trainable state, the body is more likely to respond in ways that support performance.

That understanding is why I created and use a non-clinical, performance-based model to talk about stress and regulation with high-pressure professionals.

✨The words we use influence how the body responds.

We talk a lot about breaking the stigma and encouraging people to reach out for help.
What I’ve personally found, though, is that many of us aren’t always met with the capacity to handle those moments when we’re not doing okay.

👉🏼It takes real trust and courage to say, “I’m struggling.”

So when that moment is met with surprise, dismissal, or the need to explain or justify how we feel, something closes. Not because support isn’t wanted, but because it no longer feels safe to stay open.

👉🏼The truth is, everyone struggles.
It isn’t realistic — or human — to be at our best all the time, no matter how skilled, tough, or capable we are. Those moments aren’t just psychological, they’re physiological.

That’s why I'm passionate about sharing simple ways to identify nervous system states, the different “gears” we naturally move through. With my background in physical therapy and mind-body wellness, we use the body to do this. Often, the body shows us before our minds can even catch up.

✔️The whole point is to normalize that we fluctuate and name what’s happening for us in the moment. We can't change something unless we are first aware of it.

✔️This awareness helps us validate our own experience and build the capacity to hold space for ourselves and for others.
