Anarkali A Musical 2022. When Saleem meets Anarkali in the gardens time stops still. He says to her I have lost my dentity, my royalty, my pride when I lay eyes on you.
har leeni tose naina milaike.

I have loved this song since I was a child and thought this would be a perfect place to use this gorgeous music written by Amir Khusrau back in the13th century. It still resonates today beautifully.

Anarkali, A Musical. 2022. "Hum bhi dekhenge" is a song I have loved since I was a child. The beauty of the song is such. The ada, naaz and andaaz used through out not only the dances but Nazar, nazakat and nafaasat. The enmity through beauty is on such display, that one is drawn.
Here is our version. Beautifully performed by our cast.

Anarkali A Musical 2022: I am a big believer in the fact that each scene should be a piece of art. When a scene opens the audience should be stunned and waiting for more.

The next video, is a lovely memory, as it was something I added on later. I felt that the true zenana placement needed a scene of its own and so I added this scene where all the girls are jealous of Anarkali as she has Saleem's interest.

The theme I chose was peacocks. So all the performers were accesorised with peacock feather hair pieces, hand fans and even the large fans that you see the performers holding were made of peacock feathers and the scene accentuated with blue.

To add to it I wanted a surreal Dali( istic) feel to the scene. So the backdrop was a little more caricaturish with giant sized peacocks to place the grandness of the women's quarters.
Starting off with a scrim opening to show the purdah.
I absolutely love the scene design on this one.

As always hats off to all the performers and visual and prop artists.

Anarkali, A Musical 2022
In this series of videos, the next clip is very interesting.
We had to show a young Anarkali coming into a Bazaar. So we used Sarojini Naidu's famous poem. "In the Bazaars of Hyderabad" and set it to beat.
The result was lovely.
For the uninitiated. Here is the complete poem.

What do you sell O ye merchants?

Richly your wares are displayed.

Turbans of crimson and silver,

Tunics of purple brocade,

Mirrors with panels of amber,

Daggers with handles of jade.

​What do you weigh, O ye vendors?

Saffron and lentil and rice.

What do you grind, O ye maidens?

Sandalwood, henna, and spice.

What do you call, O ye pedlars?

Chessmen and ivory dice.

​What do you weave, O ye flower-girls

With tassels of azure and red?

Crowns for the brow of a bridegroom,

Anarkali, A Musical 2022

As I continue with my favorite Anarkali clips.
This one stands out.

I wanted Saleem and Anarkali's first formal meeting to be colorful. So I picked Holi as a theme.
It not only made for a beautifully energized stage but the colors made the audience feel they were in a dream. We used chiffon fabric to create the illusion of a brightly colored Holi play. The fabric also represented the purdah,
Haya and the zenana.

The theme also represented the beautiful Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb of 16th century India under Akbar's rule.

All the performers were just perfection 👌
One of my favorites from the show enjoy.
