One of the first instructors I learned Jiu Jitsu from gave me this advice during an early lesson. He was a veteran police officer with a lot of experience, and knew the dangers of being hyper focused in an altercation outside of the consensual environment of the ring or mats. He would have us do a drill during our UP DOWN & OUTS, where the OUT guy would approach and the DOWN guy would have to notice and give commands or touch the leg of the guy approaching.
I still find myself monitoring who enters and leaves the gym while I’m sparring or rolling, and think of the lessons he taught me.

On a Friday in fifth grade I got a call from Mr. Boyd asking if my brother and I wanted to work that Saturday at his tool shop in East Pittsburgh. I told thank you, but we had plans with friends. When I hung up and told my dad who it was and what he wanted, my dad told me to call him back and say yes. We worked half a day that Saturday. Getting close to summer that year he asked if we wanted to work for him for the summer. That turned into me working for him almost every summer from end of fifth grade until I graduated Penn State in 2003. I then worked for him full time until getting hired as a police officer.

I didn’t really like working there, but I loved working for him. He required hard work but was extremely fair. I learned so much working for him. He was more of a business mentor than a boss.

While I remember this day as the anniversary of your death, not a day goes by that I don’t think of the lessons I learned from you. I’m so thankful my dad made me call you back and the years that followed working for yo, learning from you, and the adventures.

WAY BACK WEDNESDAY

To when I got my truck stuck in a mud pit and had to hike out. Then the temperatures dropped overnight and it was frozen in place for several days. I had to pay a construction company to drive their back hoe in and drag it out. Then I had to build a tent over it with tarps and heat it with a torpedo heater to literally thaw the truck out so it would start.

I’ve never been confused for my parent’s smartest child.

You can question his choice in fi****ms, his style of training, his accuracy, his tactics, and much more. But by him choosing to make carrying a pistol a part of his everyday life he saved others.
