The following are the results on Tuesday, February 26th, for day 15 of the 2019 PSSA Winter League.
Managers:
Team 1 (Gary Jackson)
Team 2 (Harold Kermis)
Team 3 (Jerry Peters)
Team 4 (Dale Edwards)
Team 5 (Ed Vecchio)
SCORES (February 26th):
------------------------------------------------------------------
Team 4 (Dale) 19
Team 5 (Ed) 20 (7 innings)
Team 4 (Dale) came out strong in the visiting first inning with 5 runs and added 2 more runs to take a 7-0 lead after 2 innings. Team 5 (Ed) countered with 4 runs in the home 1st innings and nothing in the 2nd to trail 7-4. Team 4 didn't score in the 3rd and only scored one run in the 4th inning to extend the tenuous lead to 8-4. Team 5 countered with 2 runs in the 3rd and 1 run in the 4th inning to narrow the deficit to 8-7. Team 4 went on a hitting tear in the top of the 5th inning scoring another maximum 5 runs. However, failed to score any runs in the visiting 6th inning to extend their lead to 13-7. Team 5's bats sprung into action and scored 4 runs in the home 5th and 3 runs in the 6th to take a narrow 14-13 lead going into the final 7th inning. And Team 4 took advantage of the "open" inning and scored 6 solid runs to take a 19-14 lead with only 3 outs to go. It was not looking good for Team 5 as they have suffered defeats like this before where they battle hard only to lose in the end. However, there was some major gut checking and Team 5 came out pouncing and put all kinds of pressure on the defense of Team 4. And the pressure cooker over boiled as Team 5 scored 6 runs to win the game 20-19, in exciting fashion.
Team 5's (Ed) Notables:
Jim Craig went 4 for 5 with a very important bases loaded triple scoring 3 runs in the 6th innings and a walk earlier.
Rick Wade, Richard Cyrene, Frank Kishman all batted 4 for 5.
Andy DiPerri batted 3 for 3 with a walk.
This was a total team effort to overtake a strong Team 4.
---------------
Team 2 (Harold) 16
Team 3 (Jerry) 13 (9 innings)
This 9-inning game moved along so quickly, with low scoring, that it ended in the 5th inning (of a 7 inning) game between Teams 4 and 5 on Field 3.
Team 2 (Harold) took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and there was no more scoring until the top of the 4th with a single run extending the lead to 3-0. Team 3 (Jerry) countered with their first run in the bottom of the 3rd to trail 3-1 and added 2 more in the 4th inning to tie the game at 3. Team 2 added one run in the 5th and nothing in the visiting 6th inning to extend the lead to 4-3 lead. Team 3 responded with 2 runs in both the 5th and 6th innings to take a 7-4 lead. Team 2's heart of the order did not show up in the top of the 7th for their 2nd straight zero scoring inning. Frustrated and a little angry, Team 2's bats came to life for the first time as a total team in the top of the 8th inning when Team 2 scored 5 runs in 7 hits to reclaim the lead at 9-7. Not deterred, Team 3 racked up 3 runs in both the 7th and 8th innings to reclaim the lead, 13-9.
Down by 4 with only 3 outs in their final, visiting 9th inning, things did not bode well for Team 2. But, just like in the 8th inning (and even better), Team 2 scored 7 runs on 7 hits to take a 16-13 lead and final score as Team 3 failed to score in the bottom of the 9th.
------------
Team 5 (Ed) 15
Team 1 (Gary) 20 (7 innings)
This was a game to test the mental anguish as well as the physical contest between these 2 teams.
Team 5 (Ed), high off of their amazing win over Team 4 (Dale) earlier, extended their hitting and run streak over to this game of their doubleheader, by scoring the maximum 5 runs in both the visiting 1st and 2nd innings with some key deep shots for triples and/or home runs. Before Team 1 (Gary) can even bat, they are down the maximum 10-0 which felt quite demoralizing. However, Team 1 gathered themselves in the dugout and put on a hitting clinic, too, scoring 5 runs on 7 hits which includes a 2-run home run by Junior Barnoff. Team 1 added 5 more runs on walks and hits to tie the game at 10. Team 1 changed its defense to focus to a "faster and focused" outfield and this strategy paid off as Team 5 (Ed) scored no runs in the 3rd and only one run in the 4th to take a timid 11-10 lead. Team 1 kept up their smart batting clinic in the home 3rd inning scoring 5 runs on key hits and walks to take a 15-11 lead. No runs scored in the home 4th. Team 5 failed to score in the top of the 5th inning and scored 2 runs in the 6th inning to narrow the gap to 15-13. Team 1 did not score in the bottom of the 5th when they scored 5 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th inning with a combination of walks and key hits, including a key triple by Joe Arroyo with the bases loaded, clearing the bases with 3 very important, late RBIs. This extended the lead to 20-13. Team 5 added 2 runs in their final, visiting 7th inning to end the game at 20-15. Team 1 remains in 2nd place and closes to 2 games behind Team 3 (Jerry) for first place.
Team 1 Notables:
Joe Arroyo is the star of the game with his crucial, bases-clearing triple in the 6th inning, plus batting 3 for 4 overall.
Junior Barnoff's 2nd inning 2-run home run.
