Three Rivers College Discontinues Official Rodeo Program
The Three Rivers College Rodeo Program has been discontinued as an official college-designated athletic program, effective July 1, 2026.
"This was a difficult decision and one that was not made lightly," said Dr. Wesley Payne, President of Three Rivers College.
The College is committed to supporting current rodeo student-athletes and will honor all commitments made to the students. College staff have reached out to all 11 students who are currently on the roster and have applied to the College, assuring them that Three Rivers College will honor all scholarship awards, housing agreements, travel support, and access to College practice facilities.
While there will no longer be an official rodeo team or coaching staff, students may continue to compete individually in National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) events while enrolled at Three Rivers College. Students who choose to transfer to another institution will receive assistance from the College throughout that process.
“While we are disappointed to see the Rodeo program come to an end, our focus remains on supporting our students and continuing to invest in viable programs that serve our region," said Payne.
This decision affects only the Rodeo program. Three Rivers College's Agriculture program and the College Farm, which supports hands-on agricultural instruction, will continue to operate and serve students, as well as host events for the greater agricultural community.

Today, we mourn the loss of Coach Gene Bess, a Hall of Fame coach, mentor, friend, and one of the most influential figures in the history of Three Rivers College.
Over 50 seasons, Coach Bess built a basketball program that became known across the nation, winning more games than any college basketball coach in history and leading the Raiders to two national championships. But his greatest legacy extends far beyond the court.
Coach Bess cared deeply about his players, this college, his family, and his faith. He mentored and inspired generations of students, helping shape lives both during their years as Raiders and long after they left Three Rivers.
His impact can be seen throughout our campus, our community, and in the countless lives he touched along the way.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Nelda, Brian, Janell, and the entire Bess family during this difficult time.
Thank you, Coach. Your legacy will live on, and you will be deeply missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go to team member Austin James and his family, following the passing of his grandmother, Helen "Mompy". We are praying for peace and comfort at this difficult time.
Malachi season has ended and so does his time with us. So he came in this week with a separated collarbone and got on 3 good bulls and couldn’t make it work. Tonight he dug deep and dang sure left it all in the arena!! So please help me say goodbye to Malachi and wish him all the blessings he could ever ask for as his time at 3R comes to an end. Thanks for letting us be a part of your life for a chapter cowboy
