Here's a number that should stop you mid-scroll. After age 30, your body quietly starts dissolving its own muscle, roughly 3 to 8 percent per decade, and it speeds up after 60. Most people don't notice until the jar won't open or the stairs leave them winded.
But here's the part my colleague Dr. Jess Andrade lays out that genuinely surprised me. Researchers aren't most worried about how much muscle you lose. They care which muscles. A study of over 2,200 older adults found that muscle strength predicted who lived and who died, while muscle size did not.
That changes how you should train. Four muscle groups show up again and again in the longevity research. Your quads, for standing and climbing. Your glutes, for stability and not falling. Your core, for protecting your spine. And your grip, which predicts survival better than blood pressure does.
The best part is you can change this at any age. In one study, six months of lifting twice a week shifted older muscle back toward a younger genetic signature.
