We’ve been resting up post-horse showing. Making experiences like that happen is no small feat. Our rest looks like still taking care of the horses daily but not scheduling much and not checking messages/emails as often. We are soaking up these last few “summer days” and it’s a great time to take a break as everyone settles back into their back to school routines. These very real pictures show what our stalls look like daily before getting cleaned (minus the moved water bucket—that was just a today feature). Our chief stall cleaning supervisor was on duty today for some cleaning and during nap time we could knock out some small odd jobs like fixing our pole storage since the old ropes broke this summer. Keeping animals always has lots of little things to keep up on. We have hopes to fence in our hay field before winter which will be a huge project, but some of these days are about just tackling the little stuff and that is okay! We’re also “cooking” up some fun stuff for everyone for this fall and stay tuned for a lesson student update!

Late grange fair post but didn’t want to miss out on a chance to celebrate these teams! Our horse showing philosophy is this: it is “exposure,” experience, and fun. The goal is never to get in the show ring or win ribbons but to have the best experience, help our horses and students have exposure to other environments/experiences, and learn well. If none of that happens and we got a ribbon, the whole point would be lost. If we had all of that and never ever got a ribbon, that is truly the blue ribbon experience.

We had an incredible experience with Misty attending her first ever off-site horse show, us having three students riding in off-site shows for the first time (we’ve only ever done in-hand), and all three students placing! To put this into real perspective, Misty was excitable and nervous. My approach is to never put a person and horse in a dangerous situation but to know each of their limits and what they can handle. Every horse and horseperson needs a little pushing out of their comfort zone to grow and learn—however, NOT at the expense of someone’s safety. Misty made it through the costume class okay but we nearly scratched Misty and her rider from their four classes the following day since they would be solo riding and Misty was nervous. However, the next day, we had a great warmup and Misty was relaxed, her rider knew the drill to help her relax so we took each class one at a time, focused on this just being a great experience and watching for any sign that we may need to scratch more classes, but they were able to do all four classes they were in and they got three fifth place ribbons in four of their classes! I personally ran Titan in the Mini Horse Jumping and we unfortunately didn’t make it past the third jump without a refusal, but it was still a fun experience. We got first place in barn stall decorating!

The costume class is extremely difficult to win with 20-30 horses and look at those great costumes our girls got fourth and third place! We encouraged each student to really “take ownership” of their assigned horse during the feeding time closest to their show time. We are so proud of these three students and horses, even ribbons aside!!

It’s SUNFLOWER SEASON! 🌻
You can catch us at The Heirloom Farmer sunflower field THIS Friday, September 4 (6-8pm)! You’ll be able to visit with our miniature horses and take photos of or with them. The only cost is The Heirloom Farmer’s admission to the sunflower field. We’ll have a cash “tip bucket” for the horses as well!

Grange Fair Horse show recap. More photos to come next week. We are so proud of Charlie, Kynlee, and Paislee for working with their assigned horses through all the behind the scenes prep, helping Misty have a successful first great show experience, and displaying incredible horsemanship in the understanding of “it’s not about the ribbons, but helping your horse and you have a great learning experience.” But what a fun surprise that all three students got placings!
