Why Don’t Sea Turtles Nest Every Year?

For female sea turtles, reproduction is one of the most energetically demanding periods of their lives. Nesting requires significant physiological effort and recovery, which is why most species do not nest annually.

Energetic Investment
Female sea turtles must migrate long distances from their foraging grounds to nesting beaches. While offshore, they undergo vitellogenesis (egg development), which requires substantial energy reserves. Once ready, the turtle hauls out onto the beach, excavates a body pit and egg chamber, and deposits 80–150 eggs. She then spends additional time camouflaging the nest—an arduous process that may last up to two hours.

Multiple Nests per Season
During a single nesting season, a female may produce 2–5 clutches, typically spaced about two weeks apart. Importantly, throughout the entire nesting season she does not feed, relying solely on stored energy.

Recovery Period
Following this intensive nesting effort, females must replenish their energy reserves before reproducing again. For most species, this recovery period lasts 2–3 years, making biennial or triennial nesting the norm.

Influence of Food Availability
Environmental conditions also play a role. In years of low prey abundance, females may delay reproduction even further, which can lead to natural fluctuations in annual nesting numbers.
