Last week I traveled along the Oregon Cascades Volcanic Arc ( ) bike route on the Salsa Flyway. Created by Ryan Francesconi and Our Mother The Mountain, it starts from Klamath Falls and culminates in Portland, covering more than 400 miles and climbing over 30,000 feet. It’s a magical ride that showcases some of this state’s incredible beauty. The Flyway was up for the challenge and proved to be an extremely capable bike, whether on pavement, gravel, or singletrack.Set up with a 700x55 Teravail Cannonball in the front and a 700x50 Teravail Updraft in the rear, the tires supplied impressive grip and suppleness, without compromising rolling resistance. Not pictured but offering much-needed protection was a Met helmet. I went off the road and over the bars after hitting a pothole on a gravel descent and was relatively unscathed thanks to its crash protection. Along with many fond memories made along the way, this was a valuable reminder to always stay focused—especially when riding in a remote area.

We’ve finally been able to log a few miles on the new Flyway. The initial impression is that this bike just wants to GO. It’s super responsive and absolutely flies when you get out of the saddle. Looking forward to testing it out on the Forest Park dirt in the weeks ahead…
