NOT JUST FOR SK8ERS
Will this be the year Old Town finally gets a skate park? The Steel Bridge Skatepark has been a dream of Portland’s skateboarders and BMXers for nearly a decade, and BikePortland’s Jonathan Maus says the urban-planning stars may be aligning for the project in 2019.
The park would be built on a vacant lot next to Naito Parkway and the Steel Bridge, and it would double as an “urban plaza” connecting the waterfront with destinations like the Lan Su Chinese Garden and Portland Saturday Market.
The price tag for the skate park is likely to be steep, but one source of funding could be the $50 million of unspent money from former Mayor Charlie Hales’ Old Town/Chinatown Action Plan.
Speaking of plans, did you know that Portland has its very own Skatepark System Plan? The Steel Bridge park is considered the plan’s “crown jewel,” but there are more than a dozen other potential sites around the city.
