Fall field trials at Castle Rock Washington are coming up soon. Any purebred basset hound with AKC registration papers may participate, and it's a lot of fun. The dogs are judged on how well they follow the scent of a rabbit, competing in the first round in braces of two at a time.
Two judges work each field trial.

This fall, roll call for all the field trials will be 7:30 a.m. at the Castle Rock Fair Grounds, and then the field trials take place in an area close by the fair grounds.
Please try to to arrive at Castle Rock Fair Grounds no later than 7:15 a.m.. on the day of the field trial so you have time to fill out an entry form for your dog. You must bring your AKC registration for the dogs you wish to enter .

Some people camp or stay in trailers at the fair grounds, so that is a possibility of you are coming from far away.

Here are the dates for the field trials

Saturday October 17 is the field trail for the Greater Seattle Basset Hound Club.
Sunday October 18 is the field trial for the Whidbey Island Basset Hound Club.

Then, the Emerald Empire Basset Hound Club will be having its annual fall field trial on Friday October 23, and Saturday October 24. The Portland Basset Hound Club field trial will also start on October 24 upon completion of the Emerald Empire Basset Hound Club field trial, and will continue until October 25th.

We visited some friends who live on Whidbey Island in Washington state, and their lives are full of puppy love this summer.

Late last week twelve bassets, seven adults and five puppies, were released into rescue from an out of state breeding facility. They were transported to temporary foster homes where they can be examined, vetted, spayed/neutered, and prepped for transport north.

In addition to the 24 dogs we currently have in rescue in Minnesota (5 of those being heartworm positive), we are vetting an additional 17 dogs (two are heartworm positive) that we plan to bring to MN in the next month or so. The cost to vet this many dogs is staggering, but we can save them, with your help.

MNBR has nearly 15,000 followers on Facebook alone. If each one of those followers donated just a dollar, we’d be able to cover all of our current vetting needs and replenish our funds from the record number of dogs we’ve taken in so far this year.

Please consider a donation, however small, towards dogs like these that have lived their entire life in cages, never knowing a home or a family.

The spring field trials took place this past weekend along the Cowlitz River banks just south of Castle Rock, Washington. Along one stretch of the river, there are enormous piles of sand dredged up in the aftermath of the Mt. St. Helens eruption, and through the decades they have been taken over by Scotch Broom, a tough brushy plant that provides plenty of cover for lots of rabbits. The basset hounds came from Washington, Oregon and California, and there was some keen competition, and some very fine runs by the hounds. We had as many as eight braces -- that's 16 basset hounds - entered in some of the largest field trials. Here is a scene (and the sounds) from the Castle Rock fairgrounds, which was the base of operations for the field trials.

We are approaching the spring season of field trials when bassets are judged on how well they follow the scent of a rabbit. The Basset Hound Club of Portland's field trial is coming up at the Castle Rock Fairgrounds in southwest Washington on May 6, 7 and 8th. The drawings for the basset hound placements in braces will be at 7:30 a.m. There will also be a concurrent field trial held May 6th and 7th at Castle Rock organized by the Emerald Empire Basset Hound. We will be posting a reminder with more information as the dates draw nearer. If you are interested and want more information, please feel free to send us a note or post a comment here.

If you just want to learn about the field trials, feel free to come and join the gallery, which has the very important job of finding rabbits for the dogs to pursue. (The rabbits scoot away unharmed.) If you would like for your dog to participate, please bring AKC registration information that is required for all dogs in the field trials. We meet at the Castle Ground Fair Grounds, and you need to be there no later than 7:30 a.m. to make roll call and brace draws. This is a photo of Triple, who earned a first place just today at a field trial held by the Basset Hound Club of Greater Seattle.
