We’ve really enjoyed having Mars spend some time with us at RuneStrong this summer.

When I asked about her biggest takeaways, two things stood out:

➡️ Progress isn’t always linear.

➡️ People are often capable of much more than they think they are.

Two pretty good lessons to carry into a career in healthcare—and life in general.

Thanks for spending part of your summer learning, asking great questions, and being part of RuneStrong, Mars.

Best of luck as you head back to Western for your senior year. We’re excited to see where the journey takes you!

81 years old.

And her goal isn’t simply to “stay active.”

She wants to get back to competitive pickleball.

So that’s what we’re training for.

Strength. Power. Balance. Confidence. And the ability to react and move when the game gets fast.

I love working with people who still have things they want to DO—whether that’s competing on the pickleball court, getting back on the trails, lifting weights, skiing, running, or simply keeping up with the grandkids.

Getting older may change how we train.

It doesn’t mean we stop training.

At RuneStrong Sports PT & Performance, I help active adults build the strength, capacity, and confidence to keep doing the things that make their lives fun.

Age may change the programming, but it doesn’t eliminate the goal. 🏓💪

I shared this 6 years ago. Still agree with it.

Maybe even more now.

As we get older, it’s easy to start removing things from our lives.

Don’t run—you might hurt your knees.
Don’t lift heavy—you might hurt your back.
Don’t ski. Don’t jump. Don’t race. Don’t take the risk.

And sure, avoiding those things might protect us from some injuries.

But there’s a risk to avoiding everything, too.

The less we ask our bodies to do, the less capable they become. Our world gets a little smaller. And eventually the things we stopped doing because they seemed risky become things we can’t do anymore.

I’m much more interested in the opposite approach.

Build strength. Build capacity. Maintain skills. Keep doing hard things.

Not recklessly. Intentionally.

Lift the heavy thing.
Sign up for the race.
Ride the bike.
Climb the mountain.
Learn the new sport.
Take the trip.

We’re all getting older either way.

I’d rather spend that time building a body that lets me keep choosing something fun.

What’s something you want to still be doing 10, 20, or 30 years from now?

Town & Country vs Central Market: Debatable

Sooner vs Later Physical Therapy: Not debatable … sooner always wins.

If pain or some other limitation is keeping you from running, riding, lifting, playing your sport, or just doing the things you love, let’s address it now—not six weeks from now.

Click the link below and let’s schedule a call to chat about what’s going on and then get your evaluation scheduled a few days from now, not weeks.

Apparently changing the name of a beloved local grocery store is serious business. 😂

As someone who recently asked an entire community to start calling my business something new, I realized I probably shouldn’t throw stones.

So let’s settle this:

Team Town & Country?

OR

Central Market for life?

No judgment. No wrong answers.*

You don’t age out of athleticism.

You might not move exactly like you did at 25 — and that’s okay.

But getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop getting stronger, learning new skills, challenging yourself, or doing hard things.

Strength matters.
Power matters.
Mobility matters.
Balance matters.

And they don’t become less important as we get older. They become more important.

The goal isn’t to train like you’re 25 forever.

It’s to keep building a body that lets you do cool s**t for as long as possible.

That’s athleticism, too.

There’s nothing wrong with a stiff-leg deadlift.

In fact, it’s a great accessory movement when you want to emphasize the posterior chain.

But Mars had a different goal: lift more weight without her low back feeling smoked every time she deadlifted.

Her setup was essentially turning every conventional deadlift into a stiff-leg deadlift—with very little knee bend and the bar well in front of her body.

A couple of simple changes to her setup put her in a much better position to use her legs and keep the bar close.

The result?

💥 20 # added to her best deadlift
💥 Plenty more left in the tank
💥 No post-deadlift back pump

Sometimes you don’t need to get stronger to lift more weight.

You just need a better opportunity to use the strength you already have.

Running economy is essentially how much energy it takes to run at a given pace. The more economical you are, the less energy you waste with every stride.

So why would hopping help?

Running isn’t just about muscles—it’s also about tendons acting like springs. Every step stores and releases elastic energy. Hopping appears to improve that spring-like behavior, allowing you to return more energy with each stride instead of losing it.

The result? You may be able to run the same pace using a little less energy.

This isn’t a replacement for running or strength training, but it’s a simple drill that costs almost nothing to add to your routine.

💥 Try 10 seconds of hopping followed by a short rest, repeated for a total of 5 minutes.

Have you ever used hopping or plyometrics as part of your running warm-up?

One of my favorite new prints in the clinic.

This iconic photo from the 1927 Tour de France is a great reminder to stay humble.

We know an incredible amount about the human body, training, injury, and recovery—but we certainly don’t know everything.

Some of the things we confidently believe today may look ridiculous 50 years from now.

So keep learning. Keep questioning. And be willing to change your mind when better evidence comes along.

Stay humble. Stay hungry.

Do you run funny? Probably not.

But there’s a good chance you could run more efficiently.

Small changes in running technique can improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary stress on your body, and help lower your risk of common running injuries.

At RuneStrong Sports PT & Performance, I offer comprehensive Running Technique Assessments that include:
🏃 Video gait analysis
📋 Individualized feedback
💪 Strength and mobility recommendations
🎯 Drills to improve efficiency
📈 A plan tailored to your goals

Whether you’re training for your first 5K, chasing a marathon PR, or just want to run without aches and pains, understanding how you run is just as important as how much you run.

If you’re curious about your running mechanics, I’d love to help.
