Old Farmer's Almanac Map Shows States Bracing for 'Above Normal' Snow

With a strengthening Super El Niño taking shape, the Old Farmer’s Almanac revealed its full winter forecast for the United States.

While the print publication comes out on Sept. 1, its website predicted a wetter-than-normal winter for much of the West and in parts of the South, Midwest and Florida.

Meanwhile, a drier winter is forecast for parts of the East, Plains and Southwest and a snowier-than-normal winter is forecast for parts of the Northeast and Appalachians, parts of the West and Alaska.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s weather predictions are “based on a unique formula that combines solar science, climatology, and meteorology, along with historical weather patterns, current solar activity, climate data, and large-scale climate signals,” according to the weather prediction model.

The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a colder and wetter winter for the Ohio Valley region with below-normal temperatures and targeted snowy periods for 2026–2027.

Temperatures and Precipitation Temperatures:
Below normal across the state, with the absolute coldest periods hitting in mid- and late January.Precipitation: Above normal in the eastern parts of Ohio and below normal in the west.Regional Breakdown: Southern and eastern Ohio face a cold and wet pattern, whereas northern and northeastern Ohio (stretching from near Dayton to Youngstown) can expect a milder yet wet winter.

Snowfall Expectations Overall Amount:
Slightly below normal overall snowfall outside of specific active weeks.Snowiest Windows: Mid- and late January, mid-February, and early March.

How Accurate Was the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s Prediction Last Winter?
The Old Farmer’s Almanac revealed it correctly predicts the direction of seasonal temperature and precipitation departures about 80% of the time, but had a higher success rate during the 2025/26 winter forecast.

“Our forecast for below-average snowfall across most of the country was correct, and above-average snowfall in the eastern Ohio Valley was also verified,” the Old Farmer’s Almanac said. “We underestimated snowfall in the northern Atlantic Corridor from Boston through New York.”

It claimed the accuracy rate in forecasting the direction of temperature departure for a representative city in each region was 83.3% while the accuracy in forecasting the direction of precipitation departure from normal for a representative city in each region was 94.4%.
