Let's talk about one of the most frustrating aspects of our game: hitting behind the golf ball. These are three reasons why golfers might hit behind the golf ball and how to fix it:
Weight Shift: Todd emphasized the importance of weight shift in the swing. If your weight stays back, you're likely to hit behind the ball. To fix this, focus on getting your weight moving towards the target during the downswing. Todd recommended a drill where you step forward with your lead foot after your swing to help you feel the proper weight shift.
Swing Direction: The direction of your lead arm during the swing can greatly affect where the club strikes the ground. Todd demonstrated how swinging the lead arm low and around often leads to hitting behind the ball, while swinging it more straight back and slightly up promotes solid contact.
Ball Position: Incorrect ball position, specifically having the ball too far forward in your stance, can also cause you to hit behind the ball. Todd suggested positioning the ball between the logo and buttons on your shirt, adjusting based on the club you're using. To find the right ball position, start with your feet together, take a step forward towards the target, and then step back slightly with your trail foot.
By addressing these three factors—weight shift, swing direction, and ball position—golfers can improve their contact and enjoy hitting solid shots on the course.
