Jiu Jitsu in America had humble beginnings. The local blue belt was often the best and closest authority. The latest DVD instructional was coveted alpha wisdom. Any flat surface, indoor or outdoor, was trainable if you had enough puzzle mats.

Last month, PBJJ had the pleasure of joining West Windsor PD’s National Night Out. Our patchwork of puzzle mats and gymnastics pads became a showcase for the art. Curious onlookers, and a handful of challengers, were drawn to the strange spectacle of grapplers practicing their craft in the open.

The night was a reminder that Jiu Jitsu doesn’t need to be so precious. All it asks of us are some mats, the drive to train, and a lot of heart.

We are always training.

Sometimes the signs that someone is ready for a promotion are subtle. Other times, they’re impossible to ignore. That’s definitely the situation with Alex and Katie. Over the past month, we’ve had a steady stream of upper belts asking when we were planning on promoting them. We figured, no time like the present!

Alex and Katie embody the work ethic and determination that we so value at PBJJ. They arrive on the mats laser focused on what they need to do to get better each day, and they have an unwavering conviction that their focus will get them where they want to go. Last night, it got them to purple belt.

Please join us in congratulating Alex and Katie on their achievement! We know — and they know — this is another beautiful step on the road to black belt.
