Big siblings swimming, cheering on baby sister while she calmly holds her float… and every single one of them knows what to do in the water.

Three siblings. Three survival-skilled swimmers. 🌊

Everyone calls them “summer skills”… until summer ends. 👀

Pools may close, but ponds, lakes, hot tubs, vacations, and unexpected water don’t disappear with them.

Swim. Float. Breathe. Repeat. 💙

These aren’t summer skills. They’re survival skills.

Kids are SO capable of learning these skills at a young age. Swimming, finding their float, taking a breath, and continuing on—these are skills that give them another layer of protection around the water.

And watching that confidence grow? One of my favorite parts of what I do. 🥹💙

The toy fell off the castle, and she immediately went after it. 🧸💦

And honestly? THAT is why we practice these skills.

Kids don’t stop to think, “Can I touch here?” before reaching for something they want. She swam to her toy, rolled into her float when she needed to breathe, then made her way safely back to the castle—with her toy successfully recovered. 🙌🏼

We can’t predict every situation our kids will get themselves into around water, but we CAN prepare them with skills to respond.

So ask yourself: if your child chased a toy into water where they couldn’t touch… what would they do? 💙

A calm float is great. But can he find it again? 👏🏼

During a clothing checkout, I want to see more than a skill performed under perfect conditions. Here, he was calmly floating when I disrupted his position with a backward rotation—and he recovered right back to his float. 💙

The goal isn’t a perfect entry. The goal is knowing what to do after an imperfect one.

That recovery is exactly what I’m looking for. 👏🏼

The goal isn’t to teach them to never fall in.

It’s to teach them what to do if they do. 💙

Fully clothed and into the water—and his response is calm: roll to his back, find his float, and breathe.

That calm didn’t happen by accident. It was practiced. 👏🏼

“Now that my child has completed survival swim, do they still need a life jacket?” 👀

This is one of the questions I get ALL the time, and my answer is pretty simple:

💦 IN THE POOL: No floaties.

When my kids get in the pool, the first thing I ask them to do is show me their float. 👏🏼 They practice the skills they worked so hard to learn—swim, roll back, rest, float, and continue swimming when they’re ready.

We don’t use recreational flotation devices during pool play because I want them practicing independent swimming and floating, not becoming accustomed to relying on something to hold them up.

🚤 ON THE BOAT: Life jackets. EVERY time.

That’s where they belong. Boating and open water come with completely different risks, and properly fitted life jackets are required for children in many boating situations.

Survival swim is another layer of protection—but it doesn’t replace a life jacket on a boat.

So our rule is simple:

POOL = no floaties. Practice your skills. 💦
BOAT = life jacket ON. 🚤

They learned how to float for a reason. 💙

Fully clothed, completing her Swim–Float–Swim clothing checkout, and HAPPY the entire time. 😂👏🏼

Clothing changes the way swimming feels—and that’s exactly why we practice in it before graduation. We want those skills working whether they’re in a swimsuit or everyday clothes.

And that little smile through the whole thing? 🥹 She knew exactly what she was doing. 💙
