BMI vs. Reality: Why I’m Not Sweating the Numbers (But Still Setting Goals)

Let’s have an honest moment.
As a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, I love data. 3D body scans like Styku are incredible tools to see where you stand, track body composition, and celebrate progress. But they aren't the whole story.

I just stepped on the scanner, and while my measurements and fitness metrics are solid, my BMI flagged at 25.4—which technically categorizes me as “overweight” by just 0.2%. Now, realistically? I was wearing clothes, scanners carry around a 3% margin of error, and standard BMI doesn't account for muscle mass or context.

But here’s the truth: being a fitness professional doesn’t mean you stop having goals.
It’s easy to think instructors have everything on cruise control, but we’re human too. We constantly set new targets, recalibrate, and push ourselves.

With my birthday exactly one month away, I’m locking in: my goal is to drop 5 lbs and shave off 0.3% body fat over the next 4 weeks—not out of frustration with a number, but because I love challenging myself and staying accountable.
I’m taking you along for the ride—the workouts, the nutrition, and the check-ins.

What goals do you have for this season???

After 20 years in the fitness industry, I’ve seen almost everything.
People push past their breaking points. Bodies shut down. Stomachs drop. Injuries happen, and sometimes you get hit with something completely out of your control mid-race.

As athletes and coaches, we get it—accidents happen, and there is zero shame in an involuntary bodily response when pushing max exertion.

But Allowing someone to continue competing on shared equipment after defecating on themselves? Absolutely not.
Could you imagine being in a regular gym somebody defecating on themselves and you being forced to go behind them and getting on the equipment? Without it being sanitized or clean?

For the people that is praising this woman for finishing the race that's crazy!! For one if you defecate on yourself your body is telling you something. Vomiting and voluntary bowel movements or signs that you are going way too hard. Your body is warning you. But not only that you were putting other people's health and hygiene at risk doing something like this. To me it's really selfish to make people get on equipment after you have bodily fluids running down your legs.

Hyrox is an intense sport, but it relies on shared ergs, sleds, mats, and stations. The second bodily fluids enter an arena with shared gear, it stops being a conversation about "mental toughness" and becomes a massive public health and safety violation for every single competitor and volunteer on that floor.
Race directors, judges, and medics have a responsibility to pull an athlete under these circumstances—not as a punishment, but for basic biohazard protocol. "Pushing through at all costs" shouldn't come at the expense of everyone else's safety. If I was a competitor I would sue them for pain and suffering. And possibly exposing me to disease.

Where do you stand on this? Should race officials have stepped in immediately, or do you believe an athlete should be allowed to finish no matter what?

Drop your thoughts below—let’s talk about it. 🏃🏻‍♂️ HYROX Official
