Teaching Associate Professor Christy Jacobs has been accepted into the Provost's Leadership Academy. This training program recognizes and builds the next generation of University leaders through activities, projects, self-awareness, improving conflict resolution skills, and expanding professional networks.

Sergey Lapin, math professor and Associate Director of the Program in Data Analytics at WSU Everett, has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Research at WSU Everett.

Mathematics, statistics, computational methods -- OH MY!

Daryl DeFord, along with Dara Gold and Amy Becker, wrote an amicus brief quoted in the ruling of Allen v. Milligan, the recent Supreme Court case about gerrymandering in Alabama. The brief centers on mathematics, statistics, and computational methods to evaluate claims and establish baselines in gerrymandering cases. Specifically, it discussed how sampling and optimization relate to the Gingles criteria for evaluating districting plans with respect to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and is referenced on pages 34-36 of the majority opinion.

Julie Lutz, former department chairman from 1992 - 1996, has left $1 million to WSU. Julie and her husband Tom Lutz were both department faculty.
