Teaching Associate Professor Christy Jacobs has been accepted into the Provost's Leadership Academy. Mathematics, statistics, computational methods -- OH MY!
Daryl DeFord, along with Dara Gold and Amy Becker, wrote an amicus brief quoted in the ruling of Allen v. Milligan, the recent Supreme Court case about gerrymandering in Alabama. The brief centers on mathematics, statistics, and computational methods to evaluate claims and establish baselines in gerrymandering cases. Specifically, it discussed how sampling and optimization relate to the Gingles criteria for evaluating districting plans with respect to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and is referenced on pages 34-36 of the majority opinion.
