Buddy Day is tomorrow, and it is going to be fun!

Bring a friend to class with you, free. Line up next to them. Walk them through the technique you worked all month to get right. Laugh when you both get it wrong. Your friend sees the part of your week they have only heard about, and you get to be the one showing them.

Bring two friends if you want. Bring three. Buddies are welcome in any class, all day long.

There is a particular stillness to iaido. It is the Japanese art of drawing, cutting and returning the sword, and it rewards patience more than speed.

This seminar covers the history behind the art, the basics every student starts with and new material we have recently added. Current iaido students will see techniques we have not taught before, so come even if Wednesday nights are already yours.

If you have watched the class through the window and wondered about it, Friday is your night. Beginners are welcome.

Iaido meets every Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This Friday is the easiest way in.

Dinner Tuesday night? Let it do some good.

We are bringing a demo to Bonefish Grill in Durham, Tuesday, Oct. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Yesterday, a room full of KIWR women got nearly two hours that we will not forget.

Kathy Olevsky, an 8th-degree black belt and former CEO of Karate International of Raleigh, came down from the North Raleigh dojo to teach our Women's Karate Seminar. We warmed up with kata, then moved into sparring. She gave us more time than originally planned and never once looked at the clock.

What she gave us went well past technique. Mrs. O is a groundbreaker in American karate, a woman who earned her rank in a space that was almost entirely male, and she spoke openly about what that asked of her. She showed us how to handle a larger, stronger opponent. She sharpened our punches and kicks. And she named the psychological barriers that stop so many women long before their bodies do.

For everyone on that floor, she is proof of what is possible.

Thank you, Mrs. O. We cannot wait for the next one!
