Two ways to do a back fist for sparring.
1. Lunge with front leg
2. Lunge with rear leg.
The first method will work and takes less coordination. But if learn how to lunge with the rear leg and develop the timing, you will have explosive flying backfists that you can launch fro across the mat.

Not sure what to do with those “boring” 180 turns in kata? Try this.
The most subtle but effective kata applications can be found in the transition movements. Look for inspiration in the turns/change of direction and the setups for blocks/strikes.
Hope this helps. Gang!!

If you really want to get better at our art, you must hit the heavy bag. It is a self-correcting tool. Mish*t it and you will know(it will spin or jam you)Hit it right and it’s effortless. And it will develop incredible stamina by doing a few rounds.
However, if your focus is self defense then you need to work on open hand strikes (hammer fist, chops, back fist, elbows, gouges). We are not pro boxers and even they break their hands. I will strike vulnerable soft areas (eyes, neck, clavicle, cup the ears) if I can and if I must strike hard facial bone I may consider an elbow.
I was able to observe a local Shotokan club train at a community center last night. It’s been years since I’ve seen Nijushiho. Such a beautiful kata imo.
