I had a fantastic time judging the Carolina Fall Classic! It was a wonderful event run smoothly by Daniel Boman and Tiffany Bouquet. You definitely need to mark your calendars for next year!

By 1914 the Foxtrot arrived from America and took pride of place in the Ballroom. Believed to be named after Harry Fox, a Vaudeville stage performer, but more plausible that it was named after the gait or pace of the horse.

By 1915 Miss Belle Harding announced the very first Foxtrot Ball & Competition. A Chasse was used for progression and turning and the speed was about 32 B.P.M. Lively tunes began to encourage even more wild steps, So, to distinguish a smooth Foxtrot from a wilder one, the Dancing Times invented the name โ€˜Saunterโ€™ ; to walk in a leisurely way.

By the end of 1918 added dips and twinkles went out of fashion and the Foxtrot developed into a smooth dance. Around this time in London Josephine Bradley met G.K. Anderson from America and she says in her book โ€˜Dancing through Lifeโ€™, โ€œthey danced as oneโ€. They entered a competition at the Embassy club, and Andy, as he was affectionately called, was armed with a fully fashioned Foxtrot. The music was by Ambroseโ€™s band, and judged by Major Cecil Taylor, President of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, and Mr P.J.S. Richardson, editor of The Dancing Times, they of course won and by 1924 were the Worldโ€™s Foxtrot Champions.

From the end of 1922, the Feather Step was danced outside partner, and from here Josephine Bradley developed the Heel Turn and replaced the Heel Pivot with the Feather Finish on the Reverse Turn which became the basis of the Slow Foxtrot we know today.
