The vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) is the longest and most critical nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, serving as a “wandering” information superhighway that links the brain to the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. It acts as the body’s involuntary control system, governing “rest and digest” functions and acting as a brake on inflammation and stress. Keeping the vagus nerve regulated—often referred to as having high vagal tone—is crucial for maintaining physical and mental health. A healthy, regulated vagus nerve promotes low resting heart rates, reduced blood pressure, effective digestion, and strong immune regulation. 📑Key Functions of the Vagus Nerve ➡️Rest and Digest Control: Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, slowing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and encouraging digestive function. ➡️Inflammation Control: Controls the “inflammatory reflex,” turning off excessive inflammation to protect organs.
